It was actually a fairly frustrating experience, knowing I was hitting against the hard limits of what my gear can manage. I'm still definately thinking of getting a 30D. Anyone want a four-month old 400D with lens, batteries, memory card and grip?

White balance, exposure and contrast are all way off. I was shooting in jpeg at a stop down for the sake of getting photos in.

    Fie, photos:

They look good to me too. Can you say please how a 30D would give greater scope for this kind of subject? Is it a matter of less noise at higher ISOs?

Less ISO noise, bigger buffer when shooting raw, and bigger burst. Spot metering as well, the floodlights kept throwing off metering.

There are a couple there I particularly like, one of which you haven't posted here - just for pure bizarreness - but obviously the top shot there is a winner.

In terms of metering, though, couldn't you get close up to say a player's t-shirt, or a spot of illuminated grass, zoom right in until it filled the frame and used the reading from that to choose an appropriate manual setting? Wasn't the light constant enough to rely on that?

They were using bright flourescent shirts that played havoc with the AF and metering. I took to prefocusing and waiting for them to cross a certain area.

    how even was the lighting?
i found while taking shots of a floodlit rugby match, that it was easier to pick a single exposure value, and stick to it; that said, i was using film.

I was a bit drunk when I came in last night...

But was the first one in colour then?

What lens did you use? I had a 350D and did a lot of indoor showjumping with a 50mm f1.8 and found that if I shot manual I got much better results. I never prefocused. I got a 2nd hand 20D and the improvement was mostly with the AF also better handling and as you say bigger buffer. Shooting a stop down will make add more noise to your pics too. Good effort on the first one.

Eh, so I overdo vignetting. Everyone has their tic. It was colour, I much preferred the black and white; I've both up on Flickr if you want to see the other.
