Yeah it was in the pilot episode. Jack was trying to save someone and Boone suggested getting a pen to stick into their chest to help them breath.

I don't know if it was Boone that suggested it. I thought Jack suggested it and then sent Boone looking for a pen so he could perform the proceedure.

Boone suggested the procedure, and Jack told him to go get a pen...I think it was implied he just wanted Boone to go away though.

Yeah, precisely. Rose was on not breathing, and Boone, being a "trained lifeguard" suggested doing "that thing where you stick a pen in their throat so they can breathe"... Jack looked at him incredulously, and told him to go get a pen from someone to get him out of the way.

As regards Nina waking before Pablo (:D) I think that this would probably be because the female spiders usually have a more powerful venom than the males.

I would not be going on and on about the times that the people wake up from. Everyone seems to be really sticking with this point. Why...

As you all know everyones genetic build is different and venom may have a different affect on different people. We don't know if Paolo is in fact allergic to some properties of the venom and he may have had an anaphylactic seizure or cardiac arrest killing him out right.

Just as it is possible that Nikki's body may have been faster and stronger at fighting the venom.

Also in alot of the worlds species, the venom is not actually more potent in the females, it is the physical size of the females when compared to males that differs.

Enjoyed the episode, but do think it's a bit odd that Sawyer wouldn't know who Nikki was after all that time on the island.

I mean, cmon, if I was stuck on a desert island in the middle of nowhere where I'm probably going to die, and she was on it, at the very least at some point over the first few months I'd ask someone "who's that extremely cute chick over there"?

Although Sawyer is such a shy, reserved character, maybe not ...

It was more of an in-joke that Sawyer was captured by The Others when the new characters were all-of-a-sudden introduced and thrust into the ongoing storyline! :D

    Ah. I see.

Also liked the misleading start of the first flashback when she appears to be a pole dancer. Had me going for a minute.
    That'll teach me.

Did the shot of nikki opening her eyes have paolo in it too. I thought it was just a camera shot of her. If it was, maybe paolo opened his eyes too (or had already), and we didnt see it.
    Cant remember though.

I hope this isn't going to be on the DVD because it had nothing to do with the show! I was wondering how Nicki was going to get bitten, then the spiders came running out of the jungle! It was complete unrealistic!?!
Unlike like last years S.O.S you have no sympathy with the characters.
Fire + water was o.k, apart from some crazy moments. But this is just baldy written drivel with a twilight zone twist.

i'm sorry but you hope this episode isn't on the dvd's, that's quite possibly the stupidest thing i've ever heard, even if it was the worst episode in the entire world it should still be put on the dvd's. what's if the simpsons did this when they start releasing season 10 onwards on dvd's not everyone is going to be happy buying empty boxes :D.
then the spiders came running out of the jungle!
did you hear artz saying when the female releases it's pheromones every male within an x (it was a huge number) will come, this happened when paulo squashed the spider.

the episode may look like filler but there's something telling me nikki and paulo weren't just there to look good -even though nikki did.

Really liked this one, after a couple of 'ploding' eps I thought this was a nice change of pace.

Seriously? How could you have thought that episode 13 was 'plodding'?

Found out how Locke got paralysed. Locke blows up the sub. Ben gets what he wants. Locke's father is on the island! Ah jaysus - the craic!

LOL yeah agreed, there hasn't been an ep like 13 for a long time :)

I guess I used the wrong term, mybe predictable would have been a better term.

As soon as Locke found out about the sub, it was obvious that he would blow it up, and that this would trap Jack on the Island and even Locke's dad being on the Island didn't seem a suprise at all.

It seem to me that for the last few 'lost days' all it has consisted of is find something, blow it up ... find something else ... then blow that up too. (I guess thats what I think is plodding, nothing really unexpected happening)

and as for Locke's back story last week ... well isnt the same one that we have seen time and time again? Locke is tricked yet again by someone close to him and ends up in a worse place than when he started the ep?

Where as I really thought that the two charactors would wake up and be 'saved', but was plesently suprised by the ending...and I liked their back story as well, for me I liked this ep a lot more than ep 13

but looking at the av score I am obviously in the wrong :)

great stuff, regardless of being a filler, reckon we could be looking back on this episode as being more important that what we currently think it is, and she was hot hot hot

The last 3 episodes since they bumped into Mikhail Bakunin in The Flame have been epic, no "plodding" whatsoever, more like "exploding".
Exposé was an interesting episode, it's the sort of episode that the producers can use to bring back old fans they've lost along the way because it was a story within an episode, it started and ended in 40 minutes, I thought that was great, you didn't need to watch the whole season so far (although I have done) to enjoy this episode. Quality viewing for Lost fans and non-Lost fans alike.

Agreed, maybe this is what they had in mind all along? They were starting to feel the pinch and needed to make an impression to get back old fans and also keep the ones they have. This ep, as you have said, achieved this.

Agree with you there to some extent upmeath but I feel that the writers have known about this episode since the very start of lost.

I dont think that "they make it up as they go along and add bits in to keep the fans happy".
Although maybe they would like us to think this!
Everything in the show has a purpose (even the giant foot :D).
They have a role and purpose for everyone and everything in lost.

Does anyone think they went to the tv studio at the start and said "we have an idea about these guys stranded on an island and we dont know whats going to happen at the end or throughout the story but we will make it up as we go along and add filler episodes to drag it out when we have run out of ideas or you guys want another series". I dont!!!

They may have dragged out particular scenes and episodes to keep the studio happy, for example, the expose episode could have been fitted in with any of the other episodes. Or like wise if the studio wants them to hurry up they can condense them down.

But they have known about nikki and paolos role since the start and we will find out that they have some importance later on.

There seems to be a hell of a lot of unanswered questions but they will all have some significance at the end. (I think!!)

    What do ya think?

I think you are very naive if you think that the creators knew about Nikki and Paulo from the very start....they didn't even introduce them til mid season 3.
even Locke's dad being on the Island didn't seem a suprise at all.

Yeah we could all see that coming from a mile away

The writers obviously don't have e-v-e-r-y-t-h-i-n-g planned. That would be crazy. But that doesn't mean they are just making everything up as they go along either. I believe they have best compromise between a plan that's tight enough that they know where the show going, how it's going to end and what the answers to all the mysteries are; but also loose enough that they can adapt on the fly to changing circumstances, e.g. actors who leave/become unavailable/misbehave, network demands, evolving ideas, etc.

As far as Nikki and Paulo are concerned the writers said they came up with the idea for the episode (i.e. Lost from a redshirt's POV) late in season 1. AFAIK they were never intended to be main characters and were initially introduced to fill the gap left on the beach by Kate/Jack/Sawyer and to stop the ABC promo people from giving away Eko's death.

Wasn't looking forward to this ep when I saw how poorly it was doing in the poll.

Pleasantly surprised, a very entertaining episode definitely written/directed by someone with a Poe-esque sense of humour.
