Right, I'm trying to send old-fangled non-internet post which I don't do very often and so don't really know very much about.

Bought some stamps in the shop although I have no idea how much I paid for them.

Now the thing is that they say "Éire N" on them.. like there's "N" where the value normally is.

What's going on? And can I post stuff with them?

You can use stamps with N on them (which I think cost either 48 or 55c - not sure which) to post letters anywhere within the Republic.

N stands for National IIRC which is nationwide including Northern ireland, they cost 55c.

    Great, thanks.

Can I use 2 for the UK in the same way I could use 2 55c stamps?

If it's just a letter you're posting slap the 55cent stamp on it and put it in a post box...it'll get there just as quick as the one you'l pay extra for...

Doesn't it depend on the size of the envelope, or is it just the motion in the ocean?

Just wondering if anyone knew how many stamps i would need to send 3 dvds in their cases in an envelope? It's fairly light so I'm guessing about 2 stamps? so just over a euro? I can't make it to a post office and it has to be sent asap.

What happens to mail if you don't have enough stamps?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,016 ✭✭✭Blush_01

It takes weeks to get there and they'll write "Insufficient Postage" or some such on it.

Jane - weigh the package on a scales. Bathroom scales, kitchen scales, whatever.

Recipient is supposed to be charged the balance to receive it...never personally seen that happen though and it's probably unworkable between countries.

If you're unsure of cost just go into the post office, hand them the envelope/parcel and ask them how much for that? That's what I do.

They will weigh it in the post office to get the correct cost.

Yup, you get to queue for the privilege of it costing you more than it would if you'd just have stuck a stamp on it and posted it. If it's a standard sized envelope or one of the smaller jiffybags with not much weight to it then 55cent is fine within Ireland and to the UK.

Sorry man. You said just ask them how much. Another poster was suggesting that you could weigh packages and letters at home and I had that in mind. Should have quoted that post.
