Vista and netopia wireless router

    hey all,
I'm trying to set up a workmates new Pavilion dv6000 to work with his wireless router (standard eircom netopia job) but I just can't figure it out.

I connect it via network cable and set WEP up no problem. I configure the WEP password and off we go.

But I cannot get it to connect with the bloody netopia router wirelessly. It can see it in a site survey but it always fails to connect citing poor connection. This is despite the router being beside the laptop and never having this problem with the old laptop.

I can connect the laptop to my own wireless network at home no problem (a netgear router).

    Anyone have any ideas?

    Cheers,
    Quad

if its any help but i think it will only work with the wireless card you buy from eircom. another way for them to make money. mine was the same and i bought their card and it was fine

Card?? What do you mean  This laptop has wireless built in.

And I think I may have jumped to conclusions before. Despite being willing to connect to my netgear modem wirelessly, the laptop still doesn't have internet connectivity.

When I snooped around the control panel (I'm still getting used to the wonder that is vista  ) I came across the 'problem reports and solutions' app.

This reports problems with the 'network diagnostics framework' and the webcam (a problem for another day).

I suspect those ****houses at HP have churned out a laptop that has hardware that isn't 100% compatible with vista.....

But now it's telling me that "This problem was caused by Wireless USB Card. Wireless USB Card was created by AMIGO TECHNOLOGY LTD."

 huh? The solution box is empty. I can find no mention of this device in device manager so I can reinstall/uninstall/update drivers for it.

I've got the most up to date drivers on the broadcom wireless modem in the device manager.

With all due respects to that is absolute and utter nonsense!

Have you tried setting up a wireless network without any security at all (temporarily of course!) to see if you can get a connection?

Has your workmate been messing around with settings?
It would be best to start from scratch by resetting the wireless to default settings.
And then as dub45 says diaable encryption. See if it can connect.
If that works then enable wpa.
If wpa does not work then try wep.
And if you get stuck just come back here and give as much info as possible.

And ambman please stop taking shlte.

    Cheers for the replies.

I disabled the security settings etc to no avail. I've checked the net and his laptop isn't the only one that's having problems with vista and the internal broadcom wireless modem.

After hours of trying, i gave up and told him I'd try again next month when hopefully HP may have issued a fix/updated driver.
