Hand in notice?

I got offered a new job on Thursday. On Thursday night, I emailed back the employer, to say that I needed some time to talk with my partner and I would be in contact soon. I also asked a question to clarify a point in the offer.

I didn't hear anything back on Friday. On Monday(yesterday afternoon), I emailed him again to accept the job offer. I gave my address etc to send on the contract, and told him I would be in contact regarding start dates when I handed in my notice.

Again, no reply. Nothing to acknowlegde that I have accepted the job, etc. Now I understand that maybe they are very busy - person is in high management position, or maybe they off, or sick etc.

Would you hand in your notice anyway, or wait to hear something.

never hand in your notice until you have a signed contract in your hand.

Trust me wait to hear something.

A friend of mine about a year is ago hated his job, applied for a new one, got offered to him he had to give a months notice, so he emailed the employer and said he would start two weeks after he finished his notice period with the current place. He didn't hear anything back went handed in his notice. A week before he was finishing up the person who interviewed him rang him and said they had found someone else to fill the roll. He was jobless for about 3 months.

Why dont you give them a call that way you'll find out if the person is in the office. If they suddenly took ill they wont have their out of office on...

I was thinking of doing that, but I don't want to seem too pushy/desperate. Maybe if I haven't heard anything by tomorrow.....

It would be normal procedure to reply to something like that though, wouldn't it?
Even just to say ok, and ill sort out the paperwork.

Yep they should have replied but their could be a reason for it. Wait til tomorrow or thursday and call them.

yeah, I'll ring tomorrow if I haven't heard anything. They were pretty good at communicating before this, so maybe he is just out sick or something. (hopefully)

...or you are their second choice (or another good person came along last minute) and they are seeing if they can bag them while keeping you sweet / in the dark.

Either way, do nothing without the contract.

I have just handed my resignation in this morning, me and my boss dont really get on, he brought me to HR for shouting at a supervisor, I had a 2 hour meeting with HR regarding a written notice, I have explained to them that I did not shout at anyone as I had no reason, anyway my manager decided to bring them in, after about 1 day HR got back to me and said theres no need for a written warning, but that I will be put on a "development plan" which will address how I should speak to my supervisor...and so on, but in the mean time I was offered a job in a hotel in finance, as I have never worked in a hotel (credit management) I dont really know what to expect as I have worked for the past 2 yrs in a mobile communication company. the new job sounds quite good, but I dont like the 4 weeks introductory period, which basically means if they dont like me they can tell me to F OFF, which I am a bit afraid.

I dont know if I should leave or not, I have to give an answer to my boss in the morning, he seemed nice this morning, but deep down I dont know if he really is, and only said that to keep me there and fire me at a later stage.

I do love the job, but lots of changes have been made and we have not been properly notified, but I do like it and I am afraid to leave my job in case the new one isnt working, I am afraid of not liking it and having to temp. The agency that I AM dealing with is very nice, and I dont want to dissapoint them by saying NO.

I dont know what to do, I am desperate, and no1 aroudn me seems to know what I should do.

My instincts tell me that I should give it another 2 months "development plan with HR" and make my decision after that.

What exactly does a "development plan" mean, and am I in a bad situation now that HR GOT INVOLVED!!!

    PLS PLS HELP

Curious, thats all. I've been hearing stuff about another one in Limerick, sounds very similar. Sorry.
I'd go with the development plan and see how it works out

ok....i see... well maybe....i will give it another go, and see what they say and do, I am just not intrested in the other job at all. But my boss has been very rude to me and its becoming a call centre so I shall be working in a call centre that belongs to cust care not finance anymore and I dont like that at all!

In my place there is 6, yes 6, month probation period.

If things don't 'work out' in that period they can say bye bye for little or no reason.

Its seems to me that you are playing the "better the devil you know" card... you've painted a bad enough picture why would you want to otherwise stay?

Because I dont know what to do, I really want to leave but I got to know the ppl, I have to be honest when I was younger not that I am 2 old, only 24, but when I was about 19-22 I had 28 jobs! While in college I kept temping and I managed to have yes 28 jobs. and this company was quite good to me up until the new manager came in and changed everything. but i have until 2moro morning to say for definit what I want to do!

and I am completly lost, I dont know what to do!

oh and just to make it clear beside the 4 weeks intoroductory period I would have the 6 months probation as well! so in total 7 months

oh and by the way to top things up I also signed a new contract with the agency if I changed my mind will that be ok, I mean I spoke with the guy today when I signed it and he realized that I wasnt 2 sure, will that affect me, its only the recruitment agency not the actual hotel itself, and the guy said I should give him a call with the new bank details, but deep down he knows i mite not go.

How will that impact on me? Does anyone know?

If you say you don't want the job there's nothing the agency can do to make you take it, they'll be a bit annoyed with you and most likely not too helpful with any subsequent job hunts but you're not locked in if you've signed something.

Re the development plan they are usually things implemented by HR to help you fix what they think is your bad attitude....

If you're sure you hate it then why stay?

I will give it another try and see what happens, I loved the job before he started here, but it looks like it was just a misunderstanding and miscommunication, and I hope to sort it out, the job is easy, and I love the ppl I work with, well some of them anyway.

Anna, you sound like my twin....I was in the exact same situation 6 months ago. I think you should stay put & wait out the storm, it will get better, Im sure.

See I just got an annnnnoying call from the recruitment agency who basically are hoping that I will change my mind, but I wont, they hate me now, and basically said I will never work with them again, and kinda threatned me which is really upsetting, saying that what are my chances in this company, now I am sure that me and my manager can work things out and at the end of the day, if its not working out well I will just get up and leave at least I am happy with myself that I gave it ago, and after all there are plenty of agencies out there!

But I am so upset of the way he spoke to me, really bad attitude, they are annoyed that they are loosing out on the commission!

A couple of points you should note.

Regardless of what job you work in, you are not covered by the Unfair Dismissals legislation unless you have been working with the company for 12 months. Anytime up to that point they can just tell you to f off.

It sounds like you could have some kind of a personality clash with your manager, and it may be in your best interests to express that to your HR dept. If your manager has lied about your behaviour, that is unacceptable and your company should have a grievance procedure to address such issues.

Recruitment consultants are basically sales people - someone IS losing out on commission. It is totally your decision whether you should stay or go - don't give it a second thought. There are a million rec. consultants out there that you can choose.

Bear in mind, if you change jobs, your new employers will seek a reference from your current employer and it looks terrible on a CV if you change jobs often. From what I've read, I would consider giving the "development plan" a go, and try to come to some kind of reasonable working relationship with your manager.

Did you have representation with you when you had the meeting with your manager and HR (a colleague / union official) and are you a member of a union?

I can tell you from experience that big changes in companys are difficult, but the difficult time passes and everything settles.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 389 ✭✭Anna23

I had a union rep with me, but I WAS doing all the talking, I was also informed about my choices, but I really dont want to go down that road.

I handed in my resignation on monday and he said to me that I should think about it, that he has nothing against me just wanted me to move away from the old ways of doing things, pity it had to come to a disciplinary meeting with HR.

And yes I am part of a union.

See thats why I want to stay here and at least leave only after 3 yrs, that way I have a lot of experience.

I have references from this job as I have asked for them, and they gave me quite a nice ref.

I turned around on Tuesday and I said to him that I am willing to stay but he has to understand that I cant work in a stresfull environment and have him on my back as well, its just not possible, and he said we can work on that.

I have lost out on 8k by not taking the other job, though I dont mind, I know I CAN get anoter job. well I hope I can do that.
