right, bit of a tricky one for ya.

came home last week from a few months abroad, and my dad told me my brother's computer isnt working properly any more.

so i checked it out, and it really is bad. boots fine, and runs games and applications to a decent level, but over all the computer is slow. i reckon about half the speed it should be.

when you try and load a website, it takes ( with no exageration ) about 2 mins per page load. no writing is displayed in the progress bar on the bottom of the screen, and its the same story on every site except google. ( set as the home page).

so, i installed firefox to see if it was i.e acting up.
same problem. so i removed them both, and installed i.e 7.
    same problem.

updated adaware, and ran a full scan. found 70 entries ( last scan was over 300 days ago!!! ) so removed the entries, and scanned again. came up clean after a restart.

ran spybot, and found 11 entries. removed all entries, and rebooted and ran a scan again. came up clean.

    same problem still!

so i updated avg, and ran a scan. took a while to complete, but no problems detected.

windows defender, same thing. no problems.

installed avast anti virus. no problems found.

    same problem....

so i backed up all his music and video's, and formatted the computer...

re-installed windows xp home, and loaded on the avg, windows defender and adaware, and spybot with tea timer.
didnt install any other software what do ever.
connected to the internet, same problem!

so, i taught it might be the router.
checked my other computer in the office, thats working perfect. no problems there at all.
other brother's laptop works fine aswel. xbox 360, no problems. wii, no problems. psp no problems.

everything can connect fine, apart from this 1 computer.

then taught it might be the ethernet cable running to his bedroom.
so we tried another cable. ( there is 4 cable's running from the router to his bedroom. 1 for the xbox 360, 1 for the pc, 1 for the wii and 1 spare.)

low and behold, still the same problem!

installed a wireless adapter from netgear, same problem using a wireless connection.
the router is a netgear, but it cant be the netgear as i updated the firmware and everything else works grand on that....

so, i stripped the computer down to the essientials. and replaced the ram.
no dvd drive, no graphics card, no floppy and just the harddrive.

    everything is stil the same.

dont think its a virus, as its a clean install. replaced the ram, and didnt connect any removable media at all...

so... any ideas whats going on at all?!!?

any help would be great as my next step is a new mobo. but i dont think thats going to help!

(XP) if you go into the Network Connections and in that window select Advanced menu and then select Advanced settings, there make sure that whatever connection you are using is at the top of the list.

    this link might help
    http://users.telenet.be/bluepatchy/miekiemoes/slowcomputer.html

make sure your not running more than one resident real-time protection program, eg : windows defender and spybot teatimer

I could find out more info if you dl this program
    http://www.majorgeeks.com/download3155.html
and do a "system scan and save a logfile" and send me that logfile.
