Purchasing Online

    Hi Guys,

I recently purchased some items on e-bay and receieved them promptly and in good order. I payed via bank transfer.

I then contacted the seller outside the realm of ebay to enquire whether he had more items to sell. He said yes.

He sent me his bank details and asked me to transfer the money and he would send the goods.

I want to protect myself - the value of the goods will come to 1250 Euros.

    1) Should I get him to place them up on ebay and then I buy them
My only concern is that the items might get snapped up on ebay and I dont want this to happen.

    2) Has anyone here used eskrow services?
Would this be a good option to protect myself when buying outside of ebay.

I have no reason to doubt he will send them but I just want to know how best to purchase outside of ebay so as to protect myself.

    Your advice is much appreciated.

I wouldn't do any dealings for that sort of money outside eBay, even then I think there is a limit of how much you are covered for.

If paypal did cover you, and it is an IF as it not an ebay transaction, then they only cover up to €500 anyway.

But if Paypal take it from your credit card you have that protection too.

I had a seller that didn't send me my item and wouldn't refund. Paypal accepted my case and refunded me about 25% of what I paid (it wasn't nearly €500 that they gave me, the excuse they gave me was that the seller only had the 25% in their Paypal account). So I contacted the bank that handles my credit card, faxed them the details to their credit card investigation area and received the rest of my money back about 3 weeks later.

Paypal aren't your last port of call. If they take the money from your credit card and you don't receive the goods contact your bank if Paypal won't sort it out.

Do you mind me asking what bank/card issuer? I have a similar problem ATM but am outside the timeframe for dispute through eBay or paypal so chargeback is my only real option.

Also what sort of details do the bank/card issuer need?
