is it possible to install winblows on the ps3?

my mate got a ps3 and wants to put a 2nd os on it. i could see an option to install other os so i presume you can put winblows on it. does formatting the drive and making a second partition for winblows format the whole drive or will it leave the ps3 os on it?

my question is can you have it dual boot for winblows or ps3 os?

You cant run windows on it and you never will be able to run it properly on it. Linux is your only option and tbh thats not even worth it if you have a laptop or proper pc

you can no more run windows on a ps3 than you could run a petrol car on diesel. the architecture of the ps3 is totally incompatible with running windows directly.

if you have seen the video on youtube of a guy running windows on a ps3, it was actually running a powerpc version of linux with some software called vmware on it which creates a 'virtual pc' within linux which he then was able to run a vmware image of windows xp on.

windows is only designed to run on x32 or x64 based systems. the ps3 is a powerpc platform, and as such, not compatible. there are version of linux that run on the powerpc platform and also x32 & x64 systems but each one has to be compiled differently to work with each system and once compiled is then tied to whichever system is was compiled for.

or as mayto said, 'no you can't'. :D

if i'm honest, i don't really knw what i'm talking about, just enough to sound a bit like i do to those people less enlightened than myself. i'm not much of a one for linux, despite several attempts at it.

ah well. i'm pretty sure i'm more or less right tho.

    probably. :)

oooh, and i'm nearly at 3000 posts. :D

Why would you want to run windows on it ..

Install YellowDog Linux and away you go...

Not worth it !??! You get a serious media center with that going... fire up proper apps etc..

Then get MAME running on it and have tonnes of old arcade classics on your TV :D

I think running Windows in VM ware qualifies as running on the PS3 .. but its going to be one hobbled / slow piece of crap ;-)

i've been following a thread on tbreak.com and it doesn't look like YDL is as much fun (or as much use) as people first thought. i'm looking for something that will allow me to replace my xbmc xbox but so far, this isn't it. i'm hopeful though, sony very obviously planned on taking the ps3 in this direction so i guess it is just a matter of time.

does anyone know if any of the other linux os's are up to the job? i was under the impression that YDL was supposed to be optimized for the ps3, but it doesn't look too much like it from what i'm reading.

Theres no chance of replacing xbmc with linux on the ps3 atm. Its only there for tax reasons again and it doesnt even have access to the full power of the ps3 (graphics card, all the cells etc). Only way you will see something like xbmc on the ps3 is if its hacked and even then i doubt i'll be easy to make something like xbmc since that the old xbox was based on some version of windows. The only thing linux on the ps3 will offer is probably the fact it'll be how ppl hack the ps3 in the first place. But once the ps3 is totally hacked then you'll probably see good version's of linux media centre's.

Hmm. First of all, it's not about tax, the EU no longer has specific taxes for game consoles as they did when Sony tried to make the case for PS2 as a computer.

Second, the PS3 won't need to be hacked in order for it to become a HD version of XMBC, for example. All the power you need is right there in Cell alone, the problem is that software has not yet caught up and isn't yet using that power. It'll take some time for people to code up stuff that properly takes advantage of Cell, but once they do, a HD version of XMBC would be right up its alley.
