Prob going to pick up a PS3 tomorrow - just want to clarify a few bits and pieces

What exactly do I need (want) accessory wise
    1. HDMI cable - I saw a few types - are they all the same?
    2. If I need to play it on a regular (non HD TV), is it a component cable I need?
    3. Blu Ray remote - didnt seem that expensive so probably should get one?
    4. Extra controller - again are they all the same /is there just one type

    Also some general questions
    5. Is the controller you get with the PS3 wireless?
    6. I dont have Broadband at the moment but will soon be getting Wireless broadband. Problem is my pc is in a different room. What do I need to be able to get online with the PS 3 - some form of wi-fi set up? Do you think 1GB wireless broadband will be okay?

Cheers - any info on the above appreciated.

    1. HDMI cable - I saw a few types - are they all the same?
It's a digital cable, so having an expensive gold plated one isn't really going to make any difference.
    2. If I need to play it on a regular (non HD TV), is it a component cable I need?
Composite cable is what you need and it comes with the console. This is the Red, White and Yellow cables. Component is HD.

    3. Blu Ray remote - didnt seem that expensive so probably should get one?
Yep... been meaning to get one myself, how much have you seen them for?

    4. Extra controller - again are they all the same /is there just one type
There is a the Sony Sixaxis ones and some 3rd party wired ones. In HMV on Grafton street they seem to be giving out free Sixaxis controllers with every PS3 sold.

    Also some general questions
    5. Is the controller you get with the PS3 wireless?
    Yes.

    6. I dont have Broadband at the moment but will soon be getting Wireless broadband. Problem is my pc is in a different room. What do I need to be able to get online with the PS 3 - some form of wi-fi set up? Do you think 1GB wireless broadband will be okay?

You'll need a wireless router. What ever broadband modem you are given, just uplink it into a wireless router and it will share you internet connection wirelessly around the house.

Who are you planning on getting wireless broadband with? Some of them are supposed to be pretty terrible.

well cant justify BR DVD remote as controller wireless with system and does exact same thing as the remote.

You spent how much on a console and cant justify €25 for a remote ;):)

The bluetooth remote is really nice actually - I it's layout is the thankfully so much better than the horrid ps2 remote.

Yeah. Using the controller is pretty frustrating.... but I guess it will do until I actually start watching blueray frequently.

    Cheers for the info guys

I thought I read earlier that the component cable did not come with the ps3 (it would be a bit silly if it didnt)

yeah the remote is €25 euro - given the outlay for the ps3 I think its not too much of an add on (of course it would be nicer if all of these add ons came with it but..)

As regards broadband - Its Quantum Broadband - ideally I would not go the wireless route except its either this or dial up - and dial up is really wrecking my head

    Thanks again

Edit: Actually, does the PS3 have a UBS slot - and if so would it play .avi/.mpeg files if I transferred them on to the hard drive?

It doesn't come with a component cable. It's uncapable of displaying HD out of the box... which is indeed silly.

There are 4 USB ports on the front... but I'm not sure about it's video play back abilities as I haven't got around to testing it out.

Probably a silly question, but for those of us with standard non-wireless BB, does it have an ethernet port?

It only plays MP4's and H.264, no avi's.

Not so bad so if I have the files converted to play on Itunes they will work on the PS3
