    Ok you need to elaborate more on how this thing is going to be set up and what it's uses are. Is it going to be a fileserver as well as a HTPC? Otherwise why are you putting a 500GB HDD in it. I think you have mixed in a few items with this list that are going to be used in your desktop PC. Can you give a list of exactly all the components being used in this HTPC and all the uses of this HTPC (i.e. will it be a fileserver, will you game on it, will it be wired into the network or wireless...etc)

    ok right sorry :(

    firstly its going to be a mediacentre for the parents to be able to watch dvds , music, video, movies,photos .all the media kinda stuff...

    its goin to be a 24 hour fileserver for me and another computer , with another coming in a few months {this is why i need the 500gig}

    there will be no gaming on this pc ..its a pure mediacenter/fileserver

    the router is to wireless the house {brothers ds and psp} even though the pcs will be wired.

    the graphics card will be Swapped with an ati x600 in my current p.c as will the Pentium D.

    one question-will the pentium d be much better than the p4 3.0 i have now?
    {gaming wise}

    Thanks

    If it is a media server & file server then get a dual core CPU, a Pentium D will suffice.

    As for your own PC no a Pentium D wont be that much of an improvement for games over a P4 you need a Core 2 Duo for a big jump in performance.

    What media centre software or OS will this be running ?

    itl be running vista premium which comes with a medicentre , but i was wondering if the tv card remote wil be compatable with it since its vista or is the mediacentre part unchanged?

    i would get cd2 for this computer but its a dell 5150 i dont know if it supports it
    according to cpuz its an intel i945/GZ mobo

    thanks

    Yes the tuner is supported by Vista Media Centre.

    Graphics card I would change to this X1300 because ATI's drivers are more polished than NVIDIA's under Vista at this time and NVIDIA's Purevideo is not working properly under Vista either whereas ATI's DVD decoder that comes free with all X1K cards is (Vista comes with it's own built in DVD decoder but it's nice to have a choice).

    According to the info I have seen the Dell 5150 does not support the Core 2 Duo. If you want a better CPU in the 9150 Dabs sell faster Pentium D's so you would at least be the same speed in programs that only make use of a single core and benefit in those that do make use of multi-cores, e.g a Pentium D 925.

    oh ok thanks but i was thinking of swapping the 7600gt with the X600 i currently have , but i didn't think of vista drivers for the X600 {just checked they do support it}:D

    but how much better will the 7600 gt be for me{gaming) in comparrison to the X600?

    Forgot about the swap you mentioned the ATI X600 will do fine under Vista.

    As for the 7600GT that too is a good card for gaming though you should know the 7600GT is being replaced by the 8600GT next month (mid April) so you would get more bang per buck if you waited.
