I have an avi file that I want to send someone but I need it in DVD format as they do not have a PC. Can anyone tell me the easiest way to convert & burn an avi movie onto a dvd?

I've had a search online an there seem to be quite a few ways, all looking pretty complicated. Anyone know of a program that does it for you in just a few clicks etc?

For this one I literally only need one file on the DVD - no menu etc, however there are others I would like to make too with multiple files so they would need a menu.

Anyone know of such a program that does this?
    Thanks

I've tried many many programs. Had issues with sync, converted VBO files too large for DVD and so on. Until I found VSO convertor. Have converted many Avi to DVD with NO issues. Drag and drop, create menu, convert. Thats it.

Had pretty much given up on looking for more programs for this for the same reasons as you just mentioned. Must try this one. Cheers.

    Re VSO Convertx
Excellent and simple to use and almost a one click operation. You can also convert & burn several avi movies on the one disk. The trial version leaves a watermark.

With other programs I would try to convert 3 DivX to 1 DVD and it would also author the file bigger than DVd capacity or I would have sync issues. Certain DivX's I had would never work. VSO has converted all of my DivX's without any issues.

Tip: Start the program on high quality before going to bed. Tick the "burn to DVD" option and "shut down pc when finished" option. Your DVD will be ready for you next morning. I've found it takes about 6 hours to do a full DVD on high quality.

Won't you have to power on the PC to retrieve the DVD

Most programs eject when finished, I assume this is the same.

Must try this program myself, I used Nero for a while but it wasnt great and a bit overly complicated for what I wanted to do.

what format is the .avi ? regardless you need to convert it to mpeg 2 and then to burn the resulting file to dvd.

I've been around the block with this one too & VSO is by far the best.
Another sweet feature of this program is this, let's say you convert a AVI file to DVD(VOB) & it is too big to fit on a single layer DVD blank? VSO keeps the converted DVD files in a directory & they can be burned successfully to a standard disc using DVD Shrink.

My system is nothing special & has 1GB of RAM (RAM is extremely important for this type of trans-coding, you can never have enough of it)
A full conversion of a movie takes me a little over 2 hours using VSO. If it turns out to be too large for VSO to fit on a standard blank? because it's already trans-coded (Converted by VSO to VOB format) Shrink will burn it in about 20 Min's.

    -:D

Can I ask what type of blank DVD's you use when burning DVD.
I've been using cheap enough ones and sometimes found that the finished DVD won't read properly in some DVD players.

Just discovered ConvertXtoDVD myself recently and find it fantastic for converting a number of divx vids to an episodic DVD. Even lets you author the menus quickly and easily :)

I use Nero 6 (Nero 7 did not agree with my setup).
    Very simple to use.

Another very good choice is "Ultra DVD Creator" well worth a try.

Thats fantastic, but you don't need to use VSO.
Anyway no word on the AVI's file type?

Doesn't matter VSO handles them all. DivX, Xvid etc.

Highly unlikely, but i'm sure it does handle the most common ones so the OP should be sorted with it.

What were you converting? what were you using? & what happened at the end? Did you get a "Fail" error?

    One avi to a dvd.
just would not play on my pc which plays other dvd's fine. Have not tried it on a dvd player yet though.

Zascar, did you convert using VSO? & was the conversion & burn reported as successful?

What software are you using to try to play it on your PC?

Some of the older drives on the early XP Dell's, will only playback -R discs

Try it in a set top DVD player & let us know if it plays.

i tried this with the dvd maker thats built into vista a few weeks ago, the resulting dvd............................................ surprisingly good!!!!!!

source was xvid /.avi no sync issue and no obvious loss of quality :-)

I've no real need to do this type of conversion generally myself, reason i did use it was for the same reason as the OP , if you have vista give it a go, i'm not saying its the best way by a long shot but its better than alot of app's you need to pay for thats for sure lol
