    Hi all,

Just a quick question, Whats the best overall image editing software thats freeware on a mac? I'm using pixen at the minute and its pretty good but for stuff like adding text it isn't great. (i.e. it doesn't...)

Sorry if this question has been asked before but the specific forum search isn't working for whatever reason...

Gimp is pretty good, you need xtools and/or X11 to use it though (free on your OS install discs).

I don't like the fact that the Gimp needs X11 installed, uses up too much HD. And I could never get it to work. Luckily I have a copy of Photoshop which serves my limited purposes.

Hi Archytas, Gimp is yer only man, as capable as PhotoShop and completely free.

As regards the search not working - I've been having loads of problems with boards, and can only get it to work with Opera, which sucks because I don't want to have to use different browsers for different sites. Safari doesn't seem to work with Boards for me anymore (10.4.9 and Safari 2.0.x)

In Firefox (maybe Safari too, haven't tried) Ctrl-click (right-click) on the link for the search and select open in new tab, there will be a box then that you can use for searching.

Try SeaShore, it's based on GIMP but it's cocoa. Not quite as in depth, but good enough for most things.

    Thanks for all the replies...

SeaShore is looking good. Have been playing around with it since yesterday and along with Pixen will suit my needs. I recently moved to Mac so have been trying to get the best software for pretty much everything... :)

I tried to get GIMP installed but the effort was too great - and this from someone who installs Xp on a regular basis... Plus the learning curve is huge.

So thanks NekkidBibleMan, and everyone else for the advice.

When looking for Mac freeware and shareware, I recommend MacUpdate on the web at:

    Enjoy!

With all these threads, maybe a sticky of Windows apps and their OSX alternatives would be a good idea?
