Ok. My old computer was windows xp. It was a dell. I plugged it in and it went poof and it died.

So, someone had the grace to do me a favor and remove the hard drive.

Now i have a new computer, a laptop, which has windows vista.

What I really dont want to lose are the hundreds of itunes and mp3s i have on my old computer.

Can anyone advise how I can transfer stuff from the hard drive to my laptop?

If you get a Hardrive enclosure , You may be able to attach your hardrive to your laptop through that.

Fit the hard drive in one of your mates pcs and set it as a secondary (slave) drive. Once its there get yourself an external hard drive and copy your stuff to that or burn them do dvd or cd then transfer them to your laptop

Yeah the enclosure is probably the easiest way around it. You are looking for something like this(assuming your hard drive is IDE) to pop your old hard drive into and then plug in your USB port on the laptop.

Yeah you could do that but it would be alot more time consuming and expensive.

Why not get a USB 2 IDE Adapter from Maplin & plug your old HDD straight into one of the USB ports on the Laptop? No need for enclosure.
