    We Do Music Present...

    Philippe Zdar (CASSIUS DJ SET)
    Music Centre. Saturday 07 April

Zdar started out engineering & producing for French hip-hop artists such as Le Funk Mob and
MC Solar; hip-hop being his great passion in the early ‘90s. While working on these albums
he started attending raves and was slowly turned on to house music, seeing parallels in the
two sounds and alongside other legendary French producer Etienne de Crécy he founded
    Motorbass

In 1996, even before the massive success of Daft Punk's debut album "Homework", there were
two French dance albums, only available as imports, that were on every discerning dance fan's
shopping list, Etienne de Crecy's "Superdiscount" and his collaboration with Zdar under the
Motorbass alias, "Pansoul", an album of deep midnight house music that was widely considered
to be the body of work that kick-started an entire wave of French dance artist albums, and even
now, is referenced as a dance classic.

For the Cassius project Zdar hooked up with Hubert (BoomBass) to record the the duo’s first
album, 1999, grounding in the sounds of hip hop, reggae and two-step to wide acclaim.

The Donna Summer sampling single Cassius 1999 broke Cassius straight into the mainstream
and was on permanent rotation on MTV (with its Spiderman meets Evil Knievel style video)
back when they used to play music, let alone dance music! The funky filtered sound came at
a time when the French dance scene was on a roll culminating in Daft Punk's 'Homework'
which was was released in 1997 and became the prevailing sound in dance music for years.
French DJs and electronic artists like Daft Punk, Air and Cassius were part of a collective
wave that stamped the covers of newspapers and magazines around the world with that
    "French touch".

Recently Zdar has released Cassius' third album 15 Again, which brings in a wealth of
influences, most notably adding a splash of reggae-funk into the mix most prominent on the
pop-flavoured All I Want. and 'Toop Toop'.

Fans from every corner of dance culture are catered for. Infused with a rave edge,
Toop Toop starts things off with a Popcorn-like sequence, The album features the duo’s
musician friends - Mathieu Chedid on a couple of guitar riffs, the singer, Sébastien Tellier on
bass and special guest Pharell Williams.
