Hmmm, interview, calling in sick thingy

I went for an interview yesterday. I rang in sick to go to it. Due to the short notice of the interview i knew i wouldn't have gotten the time off, and i couldn't risk asking for the time off and being refused and then ringing in sick anyway as it's a bit cheeky:p

Anyway, in my experience prospective employers have never contacted current employers for a reference. However this guy did seem like he was genuinely going to contact HR in my current job. That's all grand, until it hit me about 60 seconds ago. What if it comes to light that i went to the interview yesterday when i was supposed to be sick?

Oh yeah, i am actually sick, i took today off too as i've have some mad kinda cough/cold/flu for about 2 weeks now that's not getting any better!!

Anyway, it just kind of occurred to me, so thought i'd ask here.

Did you tell him they could use your current employers as a reference? It would be extremly unusual for them to want to use your current employers for a reference.

well he did mention it, asked if he could contact, i wasn't going to say no. I didn't realise it was unusual to contact current employers. But like i said, in my experience no one has even contacted a previous(or current) employer for a reference.
