Highest Entry Point in the Civil Service

I have been working in Industry for approx 15 years and would like to give it a go in the Civil Service. Can anybody tell me what the highest entry point is on an open competition that you would have a reasonable chance of getting. I applied for the Principal Officer position but there are over 1000 going for very few positions (for outsiders anyway).
Can a person get in at Assistant Principal level? Or is a person better off trying to get a job as a statistician through that exam process or in as an administrative officer and work up after that. Or are there positions in the Health Board or County Councils and are they transferrable easily?

    Any suggestions would be welcome?

You can go in at pretty much any level now. There was a big competition for HEO and AP about a year and a half ago. However they aren't really any easier to get, I think something like 3000 people went for the AP exams and they put the top 50 on the panel for jobs.

I'd advise you if youv'e a background in stats, maths etc to enter at AO level (theres current competitions for AO on www.publicjobs.ie). The next level up is AP. It's might be more beneficial entering this way then going straingt for the AP.

After 15 years of real work you probably need a rest, the civil service is perfect!

The AO competition ended last week, unfortunately. I think they recruit Executive Officers (EO) every two years, the last competition was in Sept 2005 so maybe there will be one in a few months' time again. EOs start on around €28.5k at the moment. Not brilliant but it rises fairly quickly once you have a year done. It's Entry-level management - not terribly taxing! 2005 competition was very heavily subscribed - but I know many in my office (including myself) who got their jobs through that competition.
