Myself and a few friends are planning to head to California on a "road trip" for a couple of weeks at the end of August. We are planning to rent a car in LA. There are 2-3 drivers (depending on who decides to come) all 21. I know there's a tax of $25 a day per driver u25 or something. Has anyone done this before? Also what's the story with the car being insured? any ideas? thanks!

I don't think there are too many companies that will rent to under 25's, try Enterprise Rent-A-Car.

We rented a car in Chicago a couple of years back. The main driver would have been 22 or so at the time and we did have to pay the surcharge alright. We managed to bargin them down on the price a bit.
With the insurance it was more or less the same rules as car hire companys in Ireland. You can pay extra so its totally covered otherwise you have to pay the first 1000 or so.
Once you get the car its a lot cheaper from then on as the price of petrol is way cheaper than here

we found a decent price on carhire3000.ie as it turns out... seems like a good deal

If you go to the airport and hire from one of the "off-site" companies, you should get a better deal. These are smaller private car-rental firms and and usually easier to haggle with. We did this in san francisco last summer and didnt have to pay the u-25 charge even though all the drivers were 21. Thery're basically happy to get your money!

cool might think about that, although I think a lot of people would be more comfortable to have everything set up before we go.

Which do you think would be better, doing a loop from LA to SF to Yosemite to Death Valley to Vegas to Grand Canyon and back to LA in 2 weeks or driving from San Francisco up to Vancouver in the same time?

The return flights from LA are the same as flying into SFO and out of Vancouver.

Try argusrentals.com. They usually have stupidly cheap rentals in the US (with CDW insurance included, which you really need if you aren't a US resident, and which can cost up to $30/day with other companies)

not pimping - I'm just a happy customer, having rented from them at least 5 times in the last year
