In my day, we just made a box and put a bit of paper into it... none of these fancy shmancy film winders!

For a timer to count your minutes while you wait for the looooooong exposure to finish ;)

Or you could stand there muttering "one elephant, two elephants, three elephants" ...etc

Actually, I find saying "one hundred, two hundred, three hundred..." more accurate :p

Kodak have a couple of links to pages that show you how to both make and use a pinhole camera

    http://www.kodak.com/global/en/consumer/education/lessonPlans/pinholeCamera/

This one even gives you an indication of exposures for various Kodak film types:

I made some pinholes from old toilet roll tubes. I put black card in them and covered the ends with card and used some medium format film inside, simply using a pin to make the pinhole and covered it with some more card and balck tape. They were actually pretty good. As the film was not on a flat surface and curved around the tube it gave a somewhat distorted perspective. you could even see the uneven surface where the pin had punctured the toilet roll tube!
