Forget about bank holidays, its public holidays.

Just happens that she was not working last saturday but today is still a public holiday.
Debenhams can not just change the public holiday to saturday can they?

Monday is the public holiday, afaik. I (and most people I know) was working on Saturday for basic pay. People working today should be getting extra pay or time off in lieu.

Debenhams only opened for public holiday hours on saturday.
So if you were not working on saturday you missed out on public holiday.
    This cannot be right.

Is she a full time or part time worker?

No. Technically the Saturday the 17th was still the public holiday. Today is just a holiday by convention but employers have no requirement to make today a holiday in lieu. That said, there are rules governing what should happen in these circumstances and they must provide a day off in lieu within a month, extra pay, an extra days holidays or the more archaic solution of making the next church holiday a paid day off.

What they have done doesn't sound correct. My understanding of this situation is that a full-time worker is entitled to one of the above alternatives.

A part-time worker is entitled to a fifth or their weekly pay in lieu so long as they meet the minimum requirements to qualify. The minimum requirement is 40 hours in total in the preceding 5 weeks.

Edit: The part time case above cover your wife.

    That definitely doesn't sound right.

She wasn't working Saturday, but is she getting paid as if she was? If so then today was just an ordinary day for her. Check that before getting upset, I used to be a shop steward in Dunnes and weekend/alternate public holidays always caused confusion.
