Valencia's David Navarro has received a seven-month European ban for his role in the on-pitch brawl in the Champions League game against Inter Milan.

Navarro broke the nose of Inter's Nicolas Burdisso, who was banned for six games along with team-mate Maicon.

Both clubs were fined £106,000, while Valencia's Carlos Marchena was banned for four games, Inter's Ivan Cordoba for three and Julio Cruz for two.

fair enough really but shouldnt that be the same for anyone who punches someone ?

Good. His club plan to appeal!! Get real you muppets  What annoys me is that it's only for Euro games. The Spanish FA should impose a ban on him too.

Seven months is ridiculous. A five match ban and a fine would have been enough.

Assuming Valancia don't go any further in the competition, it'll probably work out about the same, considering the summer break.

It seems to be that when a incident like this happens after the final whistle the punishment soures up for some reasons

Uefa have asked Fifa that they row in behind this decision and ban him from all football for the 7 months:eek:

That would be like a 30 game ban or something. It was a disgraceful action to be honest, but probably just ban him from all football till the end of the season would be sufficient.

I remember after the famous Cantona incident in Jan'95, Utd banned him for the rest of the season, which was fair enough, but the FA decided to extend it to Sept. That was too harsh and I think 7 months from all football(5 months effectively) is also too harsh on this occasion.

If he's arrested for assault and recieves the same punishment that you or I would for intentionally breaking someone's nose in a cowardly attack, then I'dm agree. However, that's not going to happen, so a seven month ban from the game that he sullied is more than fair.

He can take up athletic in the meantime managed to run away from the inter players quite well

jesus lads, he should easily get 7 months

its not as if there was a tussle between him and someone else on teh pitch.

he ran onto the pitch and broke someones nose.

if a lad on teh street ran into the middle of a row and broke someones nose, you would expect him to probably get a suspended sentence

    easily deserves 7 months

Yeh seriously, he was actually on the bench, got up, ran over, punched a guy full force in the face, broke his nose, then legged it off.

I wish he got done for assault, it's about time these people realised that the law still exists on the football pitch.

    That about sums it up.

I would have thought that a fine closer to the £1,000,000 mark per club (all going to charity) would have been justified also. I could see the clubs garnishing the wages of those involved if that was the case.

    One question:

Anyone know what UEFA/ FIFA do with money they receive through fines?

Rio Ferdinand got an 8 month ban for missing a drugs test. Doesn't that put the ban into perspective? I think it's about right.

Just about the first thing PHB has ever said that made sense.

With regard the Ferdinand ban, the ban for missing the test has to be as long or longer than failing one. Otherwise players would just "miss" tests everytime they know they will fail it and take the smaller ban and not have a failed test on their record.

RE: Navarro - Some people are defending the indefensable (sp?). As PHB said he wasnt even on the pitch, but took it unpon himself to get up, run over and deck someone. Then run off.

In fairness ferdinand wasn't proved guilty, so it could have been a genuine mistake.

As for Navarro, running onto a pitch, punching a random player in the face and running away like a little girl - all captured on live TV broadcast to millions of people - the guy has no defence.

As for a £100,000 fine  come on. A weeks wages to some of those players. The clubs should be hit hard with a few million or else a ban on transfer activity for one transfer window.

I think a 7-month ban, if for all games, would be very harsh.

He came on and punched somebody AFTER a brawl had already started. As someone said, if all players are punished for throwing a punch, even those that dont connect, in the EXACT same way, then fine. But they aren't. What about the Inter players who then tried to slice him down with a sliding tackle/kick? Isnt their actions equally as reprehensible. And wasn't the guy that he hit also fighting with other people BEFORE Navarro came on the pitch? It wasnt as if he was an innocent party.

Overall, its a sorry sight to see supposedly grown-up men acting like they did and players should get banned. But I would be in favour of banning many more players than currently cited. Its a tough call for Uefa and the FA's concerned as a mass brawl means many participants and at fault and they probably cant ban all those involved. Or can they? Maybe if they did players would think twice before acting and reacting. There's too much unnecessary handbags going on ......

Useing "brawl" in a loose way their redspider. It was little more than 20 guys dancing around each other and doing some shoving.. till Navarro got involved that is.

Navarro's 7 month ban just got extended to all competitions by FIFA according to SSN

    I thinks its very harsh.

Can he appeal it? I didnt think FIFA could act on this as it was a UEFA competition

Its not an exact science as to when a brawl starts, but clearly, this was a brawl of a sort - not the worst one it has to be said and you're right that it did escalate after the broken nose incident. But the shoving and pushing was wrong in the first place. Its not as if Navarro started the thing, although its clear that what he did was cowardly and clearly wrong.

My main point is that the punishment should fit the crime and should be handed out evenly to all of those involved, players, staff, subs, etc. Uefa and now seemingly Fifa are going overboard with a punishment singling out one of the offenders. That is not justice on my opinion, and wont be seen as justice by football followers at large, and those that were doing the slide tackle kick attempts are equally out of order, as were others. Also, rules need to be applied equally across all matches in Europe, or indeed the world.

Its not easy to dish out fair and equitable punishments but 7 months does not seem fair to me.

Someone mentioned the Cantona case, but this was completely different. He was the first person to commence violence in that situation and against a member of the public (who was still in the public area) and with a flying kick. He was lucky he didnt get a custodial sentence to make an example of him due to the public nature of his actions. The two acts (Navarro/Cantona) cannot be compared.

Quite right. It should also apply to other assaults such as stamping, kicking, elbowing (de Rossi got 3 matches, no) or leaping from the field of play to attack a fan. I still can't believe Eric wasn't prosecuted for that - I would have been!
