The funny thing is we all took it at the time to be Claire's mum denying Christian from seeing his daughter, when now we know that it was Claire didn't want to see him and the Aunt also stopping him from seeing her.

    Interesting....

It is possible that the black smoke is the cognitive collection of the others.

Well it is best explained as:

    **********************************************************

The term cognition is used in several loosely related ways to refer to a faculty for the human-like processing of information, applying knowledge and changing preferences. Cognition or cognitive processes can be natural and artificial, conscious and not conscious; therefore, they are analyzed from different perspectives and in different contexts, in anesthesia, neurology, psychology, philosophy, systemics and computer science. The concept of cognition is closely related to such abstract concepts as mind, reasoning, perception, intelligence, learning, and many others that describe numerous capabilities of human mind and expected properties of artificial or synthetic intelligence. Cognition is an abstract property of advanced living organisms; therefore, it is studied as a direct property of a brain or of an abstract mind on subsymbolic and symbolic levels.

    **********************************************************

Essentially a collection of the Others or Dharmas thoughts, manifested in a non living organisiam. The voices we hear in the bushes many times, warned the losties of danger etc.

The cognitive collection of the others?

It wouldn't have physical manifestation as smoke, and wouldn't make noise and spark with electro static flashes...

I still think that it is a kind of a machine veiling itself in the "black smoke" that we know of. The Cerberus security system. Also suggesting that there are 3 of them, cerberus being the 3 headed guard dog in legend. One being the agressive black smoke that attacked people and killed Mr Eko. The other being the more passive black smoke that shows people visions, that John Locke and Mr. Eko looked into and saw various things in. The third being the "Hurley bird" that has been shown a few times.

While Smokey can obviously take the form of people from the past as well as the power to deal out judgements on the lostaways, I think it's purpose as a "security system" may be to protect a certain part of the island against intrusion. Going by the blastdoor map Smokey's real name may be Cerberus, a reference to Greek mythology. Cerberus was a three-headed dog that guarded the gates to Hades and allowed spirits to enter but not leave. Remember in the first season when Smokey tried to drag Locke into a hole in the ground? Well I think there's another part of the island we have haven't seen yet ;)

    The Cerberus security system.
Did we ever hear it refered to as Cerberus in the show?

I too agree that the smoke is just a "cloaking device" per-say covering the smokes true identity. You see if the smoke is infact a mechanical/electrical device then it would have been destroyed when the EMP went off on the Island. It seems to be a very complicated entity.

No but it was on the blastdoor map in season 2. There was also reference to CVI, CVII, CVIII, etc. Which may mean Cerberus Vent, which is possibly what Smokey tried to pull Locke into in season 1. I think once the mystery of the Others is wrapped up this season, next year may be about the people who live below.

Not nessecarily, it could have merely experienced a temporary loss of power, as most other things seem to be functioning, lights, computers, security systems etc...

Good theory, the Dharma people could still be on the island, only... hidden away, while the Others live on the land, the Dharma people could live under/in the island!

I do think there are still people left from the Dharma group but as to their location, is a puzzle. One thing i can see making a return is the significance of the "Black Rock". The Others may have originated from the Black Rock.

    Wasn't that just an in-joke?

No you can see the bird-like creature swoop down from the trees and when it flies over Hurley is sounds like it says his name.

As well as that, there are a few times when there seems to be a small cloud of the black smoke which I believe to be the "hurley-bird" too, as opposed to the way I think there are two larger instances of the black smoke, one benign, the other vicious.

And you could see it pretty clearly when it flew at Kate et. al. at the end of season 2...

Yeah actually, it was alot smaller than the Black Smoke that we know of. I am not sure though if the Black Smoke can appear in more that one form. We really don't know what it is still.

I don't mean it appearing in different forms, I meant that there are 3 seperate entities... 3 different versions. The small one being the "hurley bird" (HB), the two big ones being the benign one that showed things to Locke and Mr. Eko (BS - benign smoke), and the vicious one that attacked Locke and the pilot, and killed Mr. Eko(VS - vicious smoke).

In fact, in the episode where Mr. Eko was killed, shortly before he is killed by the VS, you can see a small smoke (HB) fly past a gap in the trees...

This is the most sense I can make from it anyway, and the three seperate versions of the smoke would explain the "security system" being called Cerberus.

Aye mate, i read your other theory about the 3 different entities. Interesting concept. The smoke is due an appearance soon also, not seem it since Eko's death.

i think it was stupid that Claire put a note on a seagull they never migrate they just stay in the same place and how did they get tagged
where is the power source 4 the big fence
is there a power station on the island

in 77 i think the hostiles refers to rosseau and the rest of her crew that were killed which is why she didn't want to go to the flame

Yeah i do think that Rosseau had seen the Flame before even though she says she did not. She refused to go with them and left them to go down to the stream. This in itself raises an eye brow to why she was so against going in there.

Yeah noticed that too, very stupid.

Maybe she wants to send a message to the other end of the island?

Did you see those tags, they are not usually like that.
She just folded up a piece of paper really tightly and tied it on to the tag with some twine or something!!!!!!! HELLO!!!! It will get wet when the seagulls are doing a bit of surfing as they do! Or even in the rain.

It was probably just written in to explain the charlie falling in off the rocks story.
