It's tough but I reckon for me it has to be Van the man Morrison.

I love some of Ollie Cole's stuff. I'm more of a fan of melodies than lyrical content, but in terms of lyrics, it has to be Ferghal McKee of Whipping Boy

Depending of what style of music your into, i guess Damien Rice has a few lyrically powerful songs, Christy Moore has some good ones in several differnt styles, if your into it, Glen Hansard has some great lyrics, especially the song "Fitzcarraldo" its a classic!!! There are so many good songwriters in Ireland its hard to pick the best!!

What about Damo? What about Bono? Paddy Casey? Rory Gallagher? Phil Coulter probably deserves a mention too I reckon.

Ah no Van, although I'm not a mad fan my any means, probably is the man really, if you're lookin' for an all rounder. But, I think it's all down to personal taste in any case.

For wit, humour, emotion, plus a ton of references to poetry, literature, politics, religion, proverbs and sayings, other bands, themselves.... for me it has to be Bellx1 and in particular Paul Noonan. The lyrics just have layers and layers - it's like a whole trolley full of onions!

Probably not has deep as some of the songwriters already mentioned, but I'd have to go for Phil Lynott. When so many lyricists seem to steep their message in metaphors and the like, it is always nice to hear a song where the lyrics are direct. I know, some of the 'Celtic Mysticism' on some of the songs is a bit hammy and his revellary in his rock n' roll lifestyle was a bit OTT ("Got to give it up" from the Black Rose) but all in all you you have to say that his lyrics and melodies always fit the song.
