Linux and PS3

Anyone going to be using Linux with their ps3?
Have a look at this video, looks pretty cool - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_ZXcuhJkwx4

The only problem (big problem for me) is that so far it wont work with wireless internet, but hopefully this will be sorted soon.
Turns a console into a fully operating pc!

Yeah, I'm going to be going with the Yellow-Dog distro, it's designed specifically designed for the PS3, and it looks the best option, either that or Ubuntu.

Haven't tried it out myself, but there may be some good info here for people..

I think there are some sites out there dedicated to it as well

For all its usefulness, I think there are still some limitations for professional Linux people (i.e. cannot access multiple SPEs of the Cell with YDL etc..)..

Plenty of limitations, and no access to the graphics hardware, so far from a fully operating PC.

It would be plain stupid for them to give Linux full access to the GPU, as then they're basically letting you have emulation of even the most recent consoles, including PS1.Although I still reckon the old Sega and SNES Emulators will work on it.

Until they fix that, i'm unlikely even to get a ps3.

They aren't going to "fix" it, as they did it intentionally.

Well I actually meant until someone fixes it ;)

Well, the only reason you can run Linux on it is pretty much because this way they can say the PS3 is a computer, which means they can avoid certain taxes. They're not doing it out of the good of their hearts, and I wouldn't expect to see updates regarding that.

But my point was, Kevin2006 said it turns the PS3 into a fully functional PC, which it doesn't, and it never will be, and that is what I was responding to.

Well Sony were also claiming that they would be encouraging homebrew, which is completely ridiculous if they won't allow access to the GPU.

It'll be hacked to bits sooner or later and its the only reason im considering getting one early. Something like xbmc on the ps3 would be great.

Why do people care so much that Linux isn't given the PS3's full potential?
I don't really give a ****, I have my own custom built powerhouse PC sitting here right now, and I doubt everyone is going to buy the PS3 with a motive of having a new PC.I couldn't be arsed illegally emulating games on my PS3 to be honest.
It just seems that people are just clutching at straws for something to bitch about when it comes to the PS3...

    1) I'm a programmer
    2) I like Linux
    3) I like tinkering with stuff
    4) I cant afford a cell blade server

    Any other silly questions?

I never considered my question silly, you may be a programmer, but I didn't direct my question at you, and you only did I?I prefer Linux over Windows any day, but when I want to use linux, I'll still probably just switch on my PC which I have going with a dual boot option, with XP Pro and Ubuntu Linux.
And if you like "tinkering" with stuff, then why don' you "fix" your problem with the way the PS3 handles linux? If you thought my question was silly, then you shouldn't have bothered posting a response to it...

because most people don't like having a massive ugly looking pc near their telly and if you can emulate full pc functionality on the ps3 I can assure you tonnes of people are going to buy it, two birds one stone.

The Cell Broadband Engine chip used in the PS3 is potentially very powerful when used for some High Performance Computing applications. One enterprising academic in the US decided to build a small beowulf cluster running Linux from eight PS3 units. It was mainly for demo/publicity/fiddling purposes but a nice idea none the less.
