Maybe I'm being really thick here, but how do I unsubscribe from a forum (a whole forum, that is, not a thread)? Can't find it anywhere and I'm sure I've done it before.

go into your user cp, you can unsuscribe from there.

Thanks .. I was staring down the menu on the left hand side, and ignored the glaringly obvious list of subscribed forums staring me in the face on the opening page!
