Avast and Symantec

    My Symantec antivirus free trial is about to expire. I tried to install Avast Home Edition 4.7.942. and received a warning that it may conflict with symantec.

    Should I just uninstall symantec when avast is up and running?

    You shouldn't run two anti-virus software apps together. So uninstall one before installing the other.

    Simple answer: Yes

    You shouldn't have 2 AV programs running

    download the symantec uninstaller from the web first - its a complete pig to remove manually (think malware) - then disconnect from the web and uninstall it

    Before i uninstall symantec, are there any other programs that i need to install so that avast + ?? program + ?? program will carry out the same jobs that symantec did?

    Well if it was only anti-virus software then that'd do.

    THough some Anti-Spyware software and maybe a firewall might be an idea if you don't have them already. Free programs for both jobs are available. Grisoft have a free Anti spyware app (ewido I think), or Microsoft offer one now too for XP users.

    If it is just the anti virus you had, then avast will do as a replacement. You should have a firewall installed and some sort of anti-spyware/malware programs, if you don't, some of us can recommend some.

    Capt Midnight is right, I've used Symantec and it's difficult to completely remove manually. There's instructions for it's completely removal on the Symantec web site, together with a removal utility, does the job in a jiffy.

    I suggest you need the following:

    *AV - Avast or AVG or AntiVir;

    *Firewall - Zonealarm or Comodo;

    *Antispyware - (all of these) Spybot, AVG Antispyware, Defender and adaware (maybe - I'm not a fan);

    *General - CCleaner. Simple and brilliant program for keeping your computer clean.
    When running the cleaner make sure you unpick your browser so your history - passwords etc. - wont be deleted when you run it. Also, when you run the reg cleaner make sure you do select to back up deleted entries.
