    Hi,

Looking for a bit of help from a Qualified Doctor. I am involved in a boxing club and we have about 10-15 young kids looking to get there boxing medical's done. GP's are charging up to €60 even if the kids have a medical card - it takes about 10 minutes work, the club is in a driprived area of Dublin and some families with 2 and more boxers just can't fork this money out.

Was wondering if a doctor would be interested in coming to our club (or we can come to you) and completing these medicals for say €20 a head????

    If interested please PM me.

    Cheers
    Paul

Surely someone here could help you?

I'm afraid I can't. I'm a paediatrician, but I work in Scotland. To work in Ireland I'd need to pay a shed load of cash to the IMO, so I couldn't legally do the medicals for you, otherwise I'd have been happy to do them free of charge.

We've a few doctors on this thread. Maybe some of them could help? The problem as I can see it though, is that it's very difficult to say somebody is fit to box, especially a kid. Also, what's the legal position if one of the kids takes a knock in the ring, keels over and ends up in intensive care? Will his ma sue the doctor who cleared him to fight?

A medical check is basically a head to toe examination. There's an awful lot of stuff that won't be picked up on a medical. Also, if you're not the child's GP you may not know about pre-existing medical condition (eg how bad is the kid's asthma? etc etc).

I suspect that's why people are looking for big money to do them. Having said that, it would be a shame if the kids couldn't participate because their parents can't afford it though.

Anyone got any experience of doing sports medicals? any ideas on how to solve this problem?
