Weed Killer for Vegetable Garden

I want to grow veg in an overgrown garden this year. I have to kill all the grass and weeds. Does anybody know what I should use for this? I'm a little worried about using the regular weed killers due to their toxicity. Is there one especially for the purpose of the veg garden?

    Thanks in advance!

throw a carpet over it for a month or two?

Black plastic polyethylene sheeting will kill it off but really you need to get in there on your hands and knees and pull out all the weeds, shake them off and throw them to one side to rot.
OR if the soil is hard get a garden fork and start turning the patch over and removing the weeds when they are lifted out.
IMHO I would be slow to use any form of chemical weedkiller on a patch of ground that you will be eating off.
Divide the ground into sections and work one section at a time, the job won't seem as daunting then.

another option would be to wait till you've got a full immersion tank of piping hot water, and hosing the patch down, if possible.
of course, this will kill off a hell of a lot of worms and micro-organisms, but is a chemically inert way of killing off a lot of vegetation.

or you could get a gas blowtorch and burn the plants at the bas eof the leaves.

definitly avoid chemicals as you'll end up eating them!!!

Would recommend the black plastic (have used it many times) it works great. But if you want to get planting soon you will have to dig it and gather the weeds. As cjhaughey said divide the ground up and dig it bit by bit and you''ll get it done.

    Good luck:)

Both! We just started in this field this year. It was very heavily grassed and weeded. We rotovated a 20 x 20 mtrs area and planted. We didn't keep on top of the weeds, not sure if we could have. The grass and scoth grass grew thickly around everything, potatoes, carrots, cabbage, etc., reducing the yield.

    I'm asking about plastic for next year, I can get a roll of a guy at work for nothing. I was thinking of;

    - Taking all remaining vegetables out
    - Using roundup to kill whats left
    - Cutting it using a strimmer and removing the cuttings
    - Covering with black plastic
    - Weighing down with cuttings
    - Burning round holds in the plastic next year to sow

    What do you think?
