Connecting laptop HDD to desktop

    Guys,

I'm trying to connect a HDD from a broken laptop to an old desktop. I received a 2.5" - 3.5" laptop HDD adapter from e-bay a while back. I've set the jumpers on the laptop HDD to slave and I think I'm ready to go now. Or am I?

Is it a simple matter of connecting it to and IDE cable and a power source and letting windows recognise it or is there anything else I need to do?

The computer I am connecting this to is running windows 2000 and the Laptop had XP. Is this going to cause any problems?

You should be able to plug it in and away you go. An alternative is to get a 2.5" external USB enclosure and pop in the lappy HD in there.

I can supply you a new enclosure to take a 2 1/2" laptop for e10 dont think it should cause conflict if both are using ntsf file system. It might be safer to take the files from a pc using xp. also usb 2 might be required to power the external hard drive caddy, 1 think anything using windows 2000 had usb 1

Thanks man but I don't think I'll be using the USB option. All I'm doing this for is to back up my music collection beofre I send the laptop off to be looked at so I wont need anything permanent.

What kind of error messages can I expect if there is a problem with windows 2000 recognising files that were created under XP? If there is a major problem with this I can always use a friend's PC.

You won't be able to attach a 2.5" hd directly to an ide cable and power connector on your pc. The connections are different. You can do as Ruu suggested and get an external enclosure or get a adapter/converter like this one:

This one also comes with a mounting kit for permanent installation. After that the pc just picks it up like a normal hd.

To the OP, what you are about to do should work fine. It is very seldom that a PC does not recognise a laptop HDD. I've lost count the amount of times I have done this. It's part of the day job for me!

I tried booting up my desktop with the laptop HDD installed but it didn't seem to recognise it in the BIOS or in windows. I brought it over to a friends house to run it on his computer and it worked fine even though he was running windows 2000 aswell.

Thankfuly my music and stuff was retreivable so problem solved for the moment

    Thanks again.
