The reigning Miss Scotland was embroiled yesterday in the latest racism row to be played out in the media after she called the black singer and actress Samantha Mumba 'a monkey' on a live radio programme. Nicola McLean, 22, later insisted she was 'not racist' and apologised for her remarks. She joins a string of politicians and celebrities who have had to apologise recently for inappropriate language on race.

Very unfortunate - in the sense that anything that gives publicity to this hideously untalented and grotesque charlatan is bad.

Didn't someone call her a monkey before this, a few years ago?
Or is this the same incident. o_O

And isn't it fantastically hypocritical and racist in itself to acknowledge (worse - even assume) 'monkey' as an ethnic slur against black people and not against white people?

Rest assured if a black person said George Bush looked like a monkey, there would be no racist accusations.

Methinks the people pointing the finger are showing their own prejudices.

Hurray, insult a black person and you're racist now.

This just happened recently and is reported in today's paper.

Someone called her 'Spa-mantha Mumbo-Jumbo' before.

Initially that is what I thought when I say the original post (I call my friends kid a little monkey a few days ago, and he is of Indian descent. But I did it because he was climbing over a chest of draws trying to show off)

But then one has to wonder why one would call Samantha Mumba a "monkey" if it wasn't a racial slur referencing to the fact that she is black. She doesn't look very monkey like does she, nor do I think she climbs over chests of draws, though that would be interesting to see

How many tickets had she sold before she cancelled that gig?

    30?
    180?

Finally people are seeing through the smokescreen.

Stupid fcuking reporters! The Scottish b!tch said our Northside Princess, "looked like a monkey". This isn't calling her a monkey. Don't reporters have a basic standard of English or reading/aural comprehension?

As to the insult, surely that is a matter of opinion? I think she looks super (but can't sing), but if someone else says she looks ugly, so be it. Nothing to do with race, and nothing a trip to Specs express couldn't fix.

Why didn't she just say she looked like the back of a bus?

I think she kind of does, I mean she's not got a very nice face at all, if you've seen her IRL you will agree. I think it's her jaw or sth that makes her face look a bit ugly.

Funny thing is that years ago the Irish were often compared with monkeys and "negros"...
    Link

So next time someone refers to a child as a 'little monkey' you can accuse them of racism and commence stoning them :D

Its utter tosh to call poor Samantha Mumba a monkey. Its blindly obvious that its an ape she looks like. People assume that monkeys and apes are the same but these people are fools.

Apes, such as gorillas and chimpanzees, have evolved along parallel lines with human beings, and are genetically are quite close to us. On the evolutionary tree, apes are no more monkeys than we are.

She looks very much like a monkey to me, I've always thought so (black-ish skin or not)

Maybe it's just me and Miss Scotland who think that!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,184 ✭✭✭✭Pighead

Pighead can confirm that Miss Scotland is definitely not a racist. She does compares different people to animals depending on their main characteristics. For example the night after she won the title, her and I got together and we made long sweaty and sticky passionate love.

Since that night she's christened me "Horseman". She told me she slept with a guy from boards who goes by the name of "The Scientist", or "Maggotman" as she calls him

An Irish comedian (James Young?) remarked on the resemblance and got into a lot of trouble for it, years back.

anyone ever the see the episode of south park that was about racism? The flag of south park had a black person (or 2, cant remember) bein hung while white folk were lookin. Chef interpreted as racist but the kids didnt and he was thick with them. The reason they didnt think it was racist because they werent lookin at skin colour. It was a good episode and summed up media interpretation of racism

They had another one too where Cartman hits Token in the head with a rock, and has to go to prison because it was deemed a Hate Crime,

so Stan, Kyle, Token (and maybe Kenny?), give a presentation to the Governor called 'Hate Crime Laws: A Savage Hypocrisy' saying that hate crime laws just create more division. It was great.

-"I'd really like to see you kids go down there and give that Governor a piece of my mind."
    -"Why don't you do it?"
-"Oh he wouldn't listen to me"
    -"Why not?"
    -"Because I'm black"

Racism makes big headlines. That's what's wrong.

It's like the whole thing with the Galwayfirst article about "African cabbies facing racism" when the reality was more along the lines of the african cabbies ripping people off, and generally not knowing where they're going, hence people not wanting to get another cab driven by an african. Had a discussion about it here.

Yes. I really see worry in this because what would columnists jump on the racist tag so fast and freely for? What possible merits does that behold, bar paper sales (I think I've answered my question)? Complete fear mongering..

If, for instance I was to say that Robert Mugabe looked like an ape, I would be called all the racist names under the sun. On the other hand if I were to say Bertie Ahern looked like a chimp no one would take a blind bit of notice. Why? I wonder.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,698 ✭✭✭InFront

There are those who are too quick to jump on the racism bandwagon and call 'racist' where they really shouldn't, and then there are those who are too quick to jump on the racism-denial bandwagon, and hotly affirm their right to say a certain black person looks like a monkey. Monkey is a common enough racist call, I'm sure most people are aware of it, and this woman really shouldn't have used it.
It's not as bad as Ashley Cole and SWP getting subjected to monkey chants playing for England a few years back, but it was definitely in bad taste.

Oh it was certainly racist, no argument from me there.

But what I'm more concerned about is the fact that 'Racism' seems to have been elevated to crime of the century, and being a murder, or a rapist, or even a paedophile. Someone goes out and kills someone, and it's barely fit for news, but if someone makes a derogatory about someone of another race, then the media is out baying for their blood.

I think in this case, miss Scotland's career is over. She'll never play this down, and she's probably never work again as a model, or on TV or such.

At the end of the day, all she really did was call someone a derogatory name. Nobody got hurt or anything, and anyone who hasn't been living in isolation has been called plenty of unsavoury things over the course of their life, and I'm sure that most people can take it on the chin. But because it was something said about a black person, the media puts on this mythic mantle of "Racism" that makes it the most horrible thing in the world.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,698 ✭✭✭InFront

Oh yeah no argument there, racism has become a full stop. It's like "anti-semitic" or "terrorist", no reasonable person defends such behaviour, so it became as easy 'crutch' for some people who perceive themselves to be disadvantaged.

It's inevitable that the media will catch hold of that and abuse it too, unfortunately their income is in hype. They love a story like this

    Thank you!

I have to remind people of this about 5 or 6 times a day.

As for Mumba... if she looked like a monkey I'd have posters of her on my bedroom wall.... I don't... I have posters of Kim Hunter.
