My friend says Green Day are better than Rancid... I don't agree... What do you think?

If i was tied to a chair and forced to pick one or be impaled on Dregins liberty spikes I'd say Rancid. But I'm not huge fan of either. And who cares what your mates think, it's what you think that matters.

True but it's sort of an on going debate... just thought it'd be interesting to see what others thought

The old green day defo!!..kerplunk and dookie, 2 of the greatest albums ever imo..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,034 ✭✭✭rcaz

I'm with SaxoDuff, you can't argue with Dookie, what an album! Kerplunk and Nimrod aren't far behind, either.

    [Edit: And Insomniac....]

I have a bit of a love/hate relationship with both bands

I've been listening to Greenday's early stuff the odd time recently and it's pretty good when you're in the mood for it but after a while you just get bored of the simple 3 chord progressions which a lot of there songs seem to be based around and I can't stand the band that they are nowadays.

With Rancid the first album was ok, Wolves and Let's Go are ok too but I'd take Operation Ivy over them any day. And plus, Rancid completly ripped off a Crimpshrine song.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 662 ✭✭✭LovelyTom

True... Rancid aren't as good as Operation Ivy but their songs have a longer life span than most Green Day songs...just my opinion

    i like both tbh :)

TBH... I ****ing love both of them. Theyre both my favourite bands. I kinda switch between the 2. Oh and the Bronx aswell.. Much prefare the older green day stuff but meh theyre still good (in a different way). Theyre just older with children now. Not like blink 182 who were in their 30's singin "I fell in love with the gurl at the rock show, she said what and I told her that I didnt know. she's so cool......."..

I prefer Green Day. As most people have said, older stuff moreso than newer stuff. But I do rather like the newer albums too. I think Jesus Of Suburbia is one of their best songs. I like Rancid. But couldn't listen to them very long in one go. I'd have to be in the right mood. It's all just personal preference really.

I much prefer Rancid. A lot of Green days old stuff is easy to listen to. Bit of no-brainer stuff to chill out to. But honest to God they've made a complete sham of themselves nowadays. Their sending out such a commercial image and the music is ****ing dire dire dire. 9 and 10 yr olds love them now. Pure pop

Exactly! i like their older stuff but just the way they're acting nowadays is even turning me off the old stuff

But would you not agree that American Idiot was a brilliantly written concept album?

    No

I wouldn't say it's brilliantly written, but it's a good album. They were sort of taking the piss with releasing nearly everything as a single, but I do like the album. They pulled off the two nine-minuters pretty well, I thought.

    Don't agree, sorry :P

ah well ;) at least I have my own opinion and I dont just follow the croud.. AI was a great album telling a great story

There's a difference between following the crowd and the general consensus actually being that Greenday have gone to the ****in dogs.

  • Moderators, Education Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 10,686 Mod ✭✭✭✭melekalikimaka

aye regardless of opinion they are a sham of their former selves...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,739 ✭✭✭Jello

Definitely Rancid for me. I'd be into of most of their stuff before Indestructible. Also a big Op Ivy fan..

They Smell Like A Crusties ****

Green Day in my opinion. They've improved so much over the years, yet their early albums are still very good and I listen to them often; 1,039/Smoothed Out Slappy Hours is still one of my all time favorites...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 287 ✭✭joenailface

rancid purely because ive never heard an innovative or difficult green day song and indestructable has a lower ****e songs to good songs ratio that american idiot...then again rancid are gonna go so downhill this album, im willing to bet the lyrics 'i lost a friend' or 'its hard losing a friend' will be on it in some way, thats how predictable they're getting

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,644 ✭✭✭Asmodean

I still listen to a lot of rancids older stuff but I'm not a huge fan of their latest stuff. I thought transplants ruined Armstrongs career, especially after THAT add. Oh yes, you know the one! :D

    I dont :( Youtube me!!

I can't stand Green Day since they released American Idiot!!! they're no Clash or sex Pistols

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 369 ✭✭singloud

Green Day were a fine band, Kerplunk was fantastic,Dookie had it's moments too.
That said I'd pick Rancid over them anyday, Matt Freeman is fantastic and every song on Out come the wolves is a gem, I'm not a huge fan of their last album though.

Op Ovy is one of the finest bands I know. Unity is....amazing.

I'm normally not into overly commerical music, which people claim American Idiot, to be, but I love that album and it got me into Green Day. Not punk, but a great rock album, I thought. JoS, Wake Me Up, Letterbomb, Are We The Waiting, I thought were all great songs.

I would have to say Rancid. No contest.
Listen to Jesus of Suburbia and then Roots Radical.
    You should understand me.

    Funk yeah!

Jesus of suburbia is a 9 minute long song made up of 5 parts and roots radicals is just a simple catchy little jingle

I love both songs. but JOS is well better. put it agianst a song like "who would have thought" and it might be a different story :)

Rancid all the way, I am not sure Green Day is a punk band anymore.

The only other band to be compared with Rancid? easy, NOFX.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 42 HeroinIsSo90's

And I suppose Bald Religion. What the hell are they up to these days?

In fairness compared to alot of English/European punk, American punk bands are ****, with a few honourable exceptions of course

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 6,525 Mod ✭✭✭✭dregin

Yeah. Ya can pretty much count the good U.S. punk bands on your fingers. There are very few from the last 10 years too. The Casualties, A Global Threat...... ehhhh.....

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 241 ✭✭Black NG-60-90

    hmmmm Green Day i guess.

Bollocks that. You can't say all American bands are rubbish. Theres a tonne of great american punk bands out there and just cos you don't like them doesn't mean they're ****e.

For me, I always seem to think that England had the punk fashion but that America had the music.

I can say whatever I think and I think for the most part American bands are muck.

 Stop trying to be such a punk. ;)

If I had wanted to stamp out your opinion I would have been a lot more blatant. Your compltetly entitled to say what you want but saying that all american punk bands are crap is being narrow-minded and using what I like to call tunnel vision.

So if you don't like a band does that make them universally bad, regardless of other peoples take on them?

The answer to that Q. is no btw.:)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 369 ✭✭singloud

England had amazingly good bands like the Clash and Blitz, sadly the pistols were in my opinion overhyped and only had a few good songs and there were awful little bands like the Snivelling ****s.

America in my opinion had much better bands than a lot of the british: ramones, Black flag, Op IVy and of course Dead Kennedys and Bad Religion.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,095 ✭✭✭OLP

I'm not getting into naming bands but I'll say I think The Clash and The Pistols are shìte. But that is in no way all England has to offer
So if you don't like a band does that make them universally bad, regardless of other peoples take on them?

    Now yer catching on ;)

I adore the Clash, absolutely fantastic band but their good albums are limited.
Ah well, the pistols only had about 5 good songs anyway IMHO.
