Have some mates going to Japan next month and am considering getting them to take back a PS3 for me. Has anyone done this yet and what are your experiences?

I was just about to post a simalar question, I'm heading to Shanghai and Hong Kong in a few weeks and was wondering if it would be a good idea to pick up a PS3??

it fine to pick one up in hong kong, i just did. payed €450 in total for the console and two games, extra controller is about €40. be wary of potential rip offs from the street shops , prices will vary from €300-500 for the base console depending on where you go and haggle, prices are always cash and they will generally add 2% if you use credit card. your best bet is probably to get one in one of the more respectable mainstream electronics shops or the mongkok computer market in kowloon. the only problem is getting it back, its quite a heavy and bulky console. i had to unbox it and pack it up in my suitcase using clothing as padding.

again to repeat , ps3 games are region free, ps2 games are not, blu-ray movies are also not region free but easily obtainable online.

So it play all PS3 games but no PAL PS2 games and also will only play Region A/1 Blu Ray movies but is about €300 cheaper, is that right?

Cheers for the info, any idea of how many kg's it weighed? I'm planning on doing a good bit of shopping and I'm not sure I'll have room for it without having to pay extra for going over weight allowance.

As far as im aware developers do have the option of locking the PS3 game regions, and many speculate that this will be done some time in the future.

You'd probab;y be better off paying the extra for the overwaight allowance, considering teh deals you will get over there.

I have also heard talk about developers planning to region lock their titles in the future so make sure don't mind getting bit in the arse if that ever happens, and I think I remember hearing that the PS3 is 11lbs.

How big is the bulk physically? As one of the aforementioned PS3 mules being lined up for this task, I'd like to know if it means tossing the rest of my clothes into the Yellow Sea before coming home! :)

The box is big so I had to leave it at the back of the plane

Heres a pic that compares console sizes. It looks as though the PS3 is slightly smaller then the original xbox.

I had it in the overhead locker and it stuck out so the attendant asked me if I wanted to leave it at the back and I said yeah
