Recommendations sought, 13k to spend...

...the wife is looking to upgrade her car. She has a 99 Mazda 323, which is fine but pretty clapped out now. She wants something solid, nice looking, not a gas guzzler as she drives about 200 miles a week for work, but as its in South Kerry not something that will fall apart at the sight of a pothole.

Was thinking along the lines of a Golf, or maybe an Audi A4, or a Passat. Any recommendations?

What about this. It's a 1.4TDI so low tax, astronomical mpg (you're talking 60+mpg) and it looks okay.

200 miles a week is 10,400miles a year, thats under the average for a car, so it might not be worth the extra cash for a diesel.

Isn't that 10,400 for work alone though like the OP said.....i'm sure other usage would carry this figure closer to 15k annually....so maybe diesel might be best for her

That car is a UK import, the price excludes VRT.

Missed that. That's another 4k or so according to my VRT calculations...that's that out anyway...

One word of advice on the Celica...my cousin was 19/20 when my aunt was driving one and though it was the best thing since slice bread for pulling women, because she constantly took his car...the reason...back pain from the seating position...some builder bought it for his son for his 21st afterwards...she drives Ravs, Landcruisers and Avensis now

Word of warning - if ur thinking of smaller and going Skoda Fabia hatchback, check the back footwells for wet carpets!! I nearly bought one yesterday, a 03 model, and upon reading up on the web, went and double checked car, and took up carpets to discover underlay was soaking!!! Theyre known for door seal problems, again not all of them, but with my luck - I got unlucky!!
