Bringing a console on a plane as hand luggage

I'm off to Cardiff in the morning and picking up a console over there. Would there be any problems bringing it back on the plane as hand luggage or would I be ok even if it hasn't been used/tested beforehand

I've done it before a good few times.
One time I was asked to open it... as it had a gun in the case :o
Another time I had to go into a room and they dusted it down and put a sheet into some sort of machine, no idea what that was about!
But all the other times it was fine, shouldn't be a problem!

I'd go along with what jester77 says, in that they may want to take a look at it to make sure there's nothing suspect, but that's routine anyway.

Also, make sure the box it's in (presuming it's in a box), fits within the dimension and weight limits of what your carrier allows for hand luggage. Their website should contain that info.

Y'know ,it never ceases to amaze me when people inquire about hand luggage stuff on these forums.
    They don't mention a carrier/aircraft type.

The obvious fail safe way to sort this stuff out is to find out who your carrier is and ring them!!!!

Not being smart but nobody on these forums can give a definitive answer

    Rant over....hsssssssssssssss:o

Maybe people just want first hand experience,as what idiots at one end of a phone tell you to what happens when you check in are two totally different things.Back to the OP I brought back a PS3 from Chicago last week with no problems at all. They knew in security what it was and the hadn't a problem bringing it on as carry on.At check in the Aer Lingus girl didn't even ask what was in the bag.Just took it out of the box to it smaller in case any of our eagle eyed customs officers in Dublin spotted it.

A phone call ain't going to be much good when yer man at checkin denies all knowledge ...

For example - I paid my luggage fees at the customer service desk for Ryanair one day and went over to checkin. I showed my stamped docket and yer one said that the date was wrong (the previous days date). Her colleague told her that yeah the customer service desk date was wrong on all the dockets that morning. Yer one insists on ringing customer services and eventually they persuade her that they had the wrong date and that no I wasn't trying to pay the day before to carry luggage on the flight...

So the moral (of this sort of long story) is if they don't believe what their colleague says to their face they will hardly believe what you say someone said.

Sometimes its good to see what people report as the actual practice rather than the theory...

Does the carrier matter to the guys at the XRay machine? I'm sure all the carrier cares about is whether it fits within the dimensions of the hand luggage sizes.

I've carried an Xbox as hand luggage a couple of times. Never got any questions asked (carrier didn't know / care what was in my hand luggage and I just put it through the XRay as normal). The carrier just ever asks if you're carrying explosives, knives, pointy objects, water etc. etc.

Look... the most OBVIOUS course of action when in doubt about a hand luggage item is to ring your carrier and ask them. If you are fobbed off by an "idiot" and then encounter problems at check in ,well you are the "idiot.

Get a name for crissakes .

posting a question as the OP did, without mentioning

    a/ carrier
    b/dimensions
    c/a/c type
    is at best naieve.

Nobody...... I say again.... nobody .....can give sound advice based on that information.

Pure rubbish. What telephone jock is going to give their name ? Even with a name you can't _prove_ what they said.

If you fly any day you see bags being brought on board that are way bigger than what the carrier will tell you but yet custom and parctice suggests that you can get away with larger bags (certainly on Aer Lingus).

It was more of a question due to the security checks more than anything else so I think the airline did not matter. Anyway I got the PS3 and brought it back, had to open the box to show the console and no problems there. The box was too big to hold in the overhead compartment so the attendant asked me if I wanted to leave it at the back of the plane.

That happened to me in Stansted a couple of months ago. The factory I work in uses chemicals to manufacture the items and it set off the alarms. I was just asked where I worked, where I was travelling to and was told that it happens a few times a week in airports.

FlutterinBantam you need to get laid, your moaning, whiney posts are getting tiresome.........

Dave, I've reported your post for abuse.

I agree with FB, as it happens. Far too often it happens that people come on looking for advice when the most obvious course of action is to find out directly from the carrier/tour company whatever.

Clearly, if the person raising the query knows how to post on a forum, it can't be much of a leap to check the airline's website for the info or find a number to call to get the info.

    It's pure laziness, imho.

It's not the airline which was in question it was the security checkpoint. Also mike if you're claiming I'm lazy for not checking it out what about you with this post: http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showpost.php?p=52879365&postcount=1

DaveMcG, keep it civil please or take it to PM.

Seem as this is over, and now in the past - I'm locking this thread.
