    Lads,

I got a 480ex flash gun off a friend of mine the other day for my canon eos 350d. He told me that its not for a digital SLR but will work in manual mode if you tinker about with the settings.

Does anyone know how I can make this work on my camera? I'm only an ameteur and dont know a hell of a lot about photography but I am trying to learn as I go.

Any tips on getting a good shot with the flash would be greatly appreciated.

I have noticed settings on the flash like 1/4,1/8,1/16,1/32 etc can anyone tell me what they are??

    have a read of:
    http://www3.canon.de/images/pro/fot/slr/bli/file/speedlite_550_ex_eng.exe

it's a different flash but many of the settings are exactly the same

When using a non-digital flash with a digital camera you must first check whether the flash is likely to fry the insides of your camera.

This is beacuse most digital cameras use less than 24 volts when firing the flash but many older flashes meant for film slr's used up to 240 volts!!!

    Lads,

Is it a 480EX or a 480EZ? In the subject you mentioned EZ. While they sound like they should be similar they are completely different units - the EZ model doesn't understand E-TTL which is used by the 350D and all other recent EOS digital cameras. This is probably what your friend meant by not for a digital SLR. The EZ range use A-TTL which was supported in the older 35mm EOS cameras. If it has a manual switch to change the power then you can give it a go, but I never had much luck with an older EZ flash I had lying around.

I don't think there are any issues with the 480EX though, as the EX range support E-TTL and should work fine.
