Hi I am planning to get married - not till 2008 but i have heard on the grapevine that you need to actually get married in the registry office the day before your wedding?
Does anybody know if this is true - or can the church perform the marriage?

Sounds like someone is winding you up. If you haven't been married before and a couple of other conditions there's no need for you to go to the registry office.

It depends on the religion. Catholic churches can automatically register marriages. The couple just go to the back room with their witnesses and sign the register. The majority of Church of Ireland curches are able to. If you are a different religion just check with the priest/rabbi/mullah.......etc.

only if you're divorced and that's only because the Church won;t mary a divorcee.

If you murder your spouse, confess and say a few hail Mary's you are ok, but do it the civilised way and get divorced and you have little or no chance.

Most religions cannot perform a legal marriage in this country.

However, most religious people in this country are members of the handful of religions that can, so most religious people can have their minister perform the registration along with the religious ceremony.

    What religion are you?
