Went to the Motorbike show in the RDS over the weekend to get some shots of the bikes and such. Havent seen anything posted so heres 2 of the same shot. First is as aout of the camera with a branding and Second is with a gaussian blur applied outside of the main subject. C&C very welcome...:)

They had 3 of them at the RDS show. Fair play to them on the Sunday it was lashing rain during the display.

Nice sharp image considering the speed of the subject!

    It was 1/1000th sec @f4 ISO 200 @ 135mm on the EXIF. Canon 20D Sigma 70-200 f2.8.

The blur in the second image is distracting and creates a very defined edge around the biker. I personally dont like it that much. Lens blur might produce a nicer effect?

Nice shot, I'd agree with bp. It almost looks superimposed in the 2nd shot. The third looks good icon14.gif

    cool shots

oh! on the third shot - because i know the background was dropped in, the area behind the wheels don't match

but they're good overall well done

Thanks Fionn, did it in work so had to hurry. Blue sky from the Botanic gardens. I tried a motion blur on the second one but it blurred in both directions, couldnt understand that?

I opted for outrageously slow shuttered action shots instead

Not too gone on the static shots, guess that's more of a biker thing, but the panning is bloody fantastic, no on the board seems to try it normally, I've had a go with bad light at the beach but this just showes how good it can get, fair play.

    nice bike shots there!!

hmm panning is a technique i must re-visit my previous efforts haven't been 100%

The best way I have found is stand there and do it. Look at the results and you will see if you are panning too fast or too slow or whatever. I tend to aim to have the subject in the same position in the viewfinder after the exposure than before. It tends to take me a handful of shots to "get my eye in" each time.

I found with panning ,it's very hard to get a good shot if your too close to the bike.
You need at least 30FT or so ,so you can get a good swing at it.
Thats my take on it anyhow .

The further away you are the slower (relatively speaking) the bike would be, and thus a little easier to capture.

It's a bit unusual when you're accustomed to simple left-right (and visa versa) horizontal panning shots to have a bike going upwards & diagonal and generally all over the place with legs flying everywhere.

Larger subjects are a lot easier to practise mega slow speeds on, at the end of the day its only really self amusement as most people don't 'get' the blurry motion effect tending to prefer a cleaner sharper 'frozen in time' look instead, but you'd get bored at that craic.

    Mmmmm... bikes....

Really great shots. I'd be inclined to agree on the blur in the second one though. Those indoor ones are fantastic too! Love the sixth one and the Gixer

Heres a few more that I have gone through from the show. I wanted some detail shots of the bike and they had some nice angles. Also I photoshopped one of the X-Fighters onto a far nicer sky with some branding in the bottom right.
