OS X (10.4.8 Intel) will occasionally refuse to launch *any* applications, or even shut down or reboot until I hard restart my mbp. It's vexing to say the least, especially as this happens twice as day.

Hmm, no idea. Why not reinstall the OS, without affecting data?

Or try repairing the permissions from applications >utilities>disk utility

had a prob similar to this recently with my Macbook and it sorted it.

I have imac osx 10.4.8 intel. I never saw that Fenster.

But when i got my new imac it was acting funny a week later and i kept having to reboot it. I rang apple and because i had not got it 14 days they replaced it and i have had no trouble since, touch wood. HOW LONG DO YOU HAVE YOUR COMPUTER ?

I am afraid thats the only help i can offer.

Have you added any new hardware to your macbook pro, like RAM? Installed any new applications? Anything that might be running in the background, a widget even?

Try creating and logging in with a new user account and see if the problem goes away.
