And a related question - is going from a 7800GTX/256 to an 8800GTS/320 worth it? Komplett have the GTS on special this week for 289 euros.

Its tempting but I think I'll hold on to my GTX for a while longer. I bought it 2nd hand for €200 a while back! I'm still interested to know the answer though :)

2 gts 320 MB in sli gets a 1000 more 3D mark 06 points than one GTX which gets 17000 I think depending on your setup you benchmark it with. Only read that last night.. big like 20 page pdf in spanish lol I could read the numbers :D

    Hope that helps

640M one is only worth it if you're going > 1600x1200 as I understand it.

I have got a 320M one on the way for a mere 266 euro from hardwareversand.de. Shipping is 20 euro and you have to do a cash transfer, but I was getting a lot of stuff, so it was substantially cheaper than komplett and well worth the extra hassle*.

I consider it, bang for buck, the best graphics card to hit the market since the 9800 pro tbh.

    *don't hassle the hoff.

Well, that sounds promising. I'd be running in 1680x1050. I loved my old 9800 pro.

Great card. 200 euro. Handled more or less anything you threw at it. Held its value well for resale until PCI-express became the standard. Overclocked well (especially with cheap after market coolers). Brilliant stuff. The only quibble I had with it was that the stock fan was poo (lots of them failed).

Found out my 8800GTS 320M shipped today. Can't wait. :D

edit: The 8800GTS should overclock well too. There are a raft of factory overclocked ones. I got the XFX one, they do an OC part, so I'm not sure if they've cherry picked the best chips. All of them should do around 550MHz though (500 is stock).

I had an arctic cooler on my 9800 pro

Would that be on stock volts?

I plan on getting an 8800GTS (640). Will only be using 1280x1024 res but I am going to have this card last me at least a year on demanding games (hopefully) so I think the 640mb will be needed. Still debating whether i'd be better going with a GTX though... What do ya think think about the 8800GTS lasting me at least a full year and running games on max?

On that res it should be fine! The 320mb performs the exact same as 640mb up 1600 X 1200

Also two GTS's perform better than GTX

    THats why i am asking,,,

I have a 2004FPW Dell 21" widescreen, I generally play everything at full res with everything turned up to the hilt if i can..

It looks like a good offer and i am thinking about it so maybe maybe not

Not sure tbh. Probably though. It's only a 10% o/c.

Don't bother with the 640 card then. Save yourself some money. The extra memory is ONLY useful at very high resolutions. 320 ftw @ 1280.

I would say so. I expect my system to cover UT3 with ease. The only other big title that will possibly be more graphically demanding (that I'm aware of) will be that crysis (I think) jungley FPS.

If you're concerned about it, you could get an SLI motherboard.

Forgot about about UT3.. well thats it sorted then!!!

If your only going for 1280*1024 save yourself some money and get a x1950pro/gt CF setup. For the same money as one 8800gts you have Extreemly powerfull setup that will piss all over the 8800gts(320) in dx9 apps. Or just hold on for the r600

Yeah i am waiting to see ATI's flagships. Something tells me they are going to be worth the wait and also bring the price of nVidia GPU's down.

Patience is what i say :)

D'you think 320mb is enough for gaming at 1680x1050?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 37,485 ✭✭✭✭Khannie

I would say so Stephen. I found a good review before (not sure where now). Have a google around.

The X1950Pro is good for 2048x1536. So it's an even better deal!

I have a x1950pro and it wont handle play games at that res 1600*1050 is a struggle.

I would add another, but my card is tripple slot, as its pelt then dual heatpipe cooled.

Regret to inform you that your old 9800 Pro passed away last Christmas. Just turned on my second system one day and it was a no go.
