A friend of mine just applied last night. He doesn't have the internet so I did it for him. Do you have any advice I could pass onto him? What is the aptitude like? is it like the Garda aptitude? are there past papers?

I know very little about it to be honest, thats why i was asking here. I have the Garda interview next week and thats no.1 option for me but i was half thinking of applying for this as a back up option.
But then i don't really much about the job, i've heard of a guy in my area who's a prison officer and he and his family were intimidated by some fella when he got out. stories like that would turn me against applying.

I imagine the Gardaí would have even worse problems with that sort of thing.

Gardaí have an easier time of it when it comes to things like that because people know if they do anything to a garda they'll get done for it.

My brother, uncle and cousin are all gardaí and have no trouble at all, I do have another uncle who is a prison guard and he has to call the gardaí all the time. Also most prison guards live in one single area (for safety) and the gardaí operate patrols there during the day.

Go for the guards before you go for the prison.

I applied for the Prison Service myself a few years ago but I didn't go any further than the Aptitude test on advice from both my uncles. Two of them were prison officers but one of them left a few years ago. I was told it is a dangerous job where assaults are common. Cases of officers being followed home and intimidated do happen but I suppose it sometimes depends on how you deal with prisoners. If you ridicule them or disrespect them they will find a way to get back at you. Other cases of intimidation are probably done out of pure badness.

I'm in training to be a garda myself and I haven't experienced any sort of intimidation towards me or my family but then again I am only in training and am new to the area I live in. However I am careful when driving home from work to ensure that I'm not followed. I'm lucky in a way as the training station I was working in the past 6 months is a good 50 miles from home. My dad was also a garda and as far as i know he wasn't followed or intimidated but that was back in the 1980's. Suppose it didn't happen back then

Well the way i look at it is that as a Garda in any given days work you may come across dodgy individuals.
But as a Prison officer you WILL come across these types.

I can understand if some concerns were raised here that you did not realise before or simply don't like. However I would recommend that you talk with a prison officer that you may know or if you don't know anyone in the service, call the prison service or wait outside a prison in hope of talking to an officer (may be extreme). At the end of the day none of us here appear to have any experience in the prisons so you should talk to someone who clarify any points.

For **** sake dont wait outside any prison to talk to officers cos 1.you'll be arrested.2,If you get the job you'll be called something like 'the Nightstalker' or some other name that'll stick with you for 30 or so years.
It's like any other job.If you treat people how you expect to be treated yourself you will have no problems.Yes you do come across very nasty individuals who want to manipulate you and bully you(but the prisoners on the other hand aren't too bad.he he) but a strong willed person will deal with these in the proper fashion and your training will give you the basics in how to deal with this.
To juanveron45 dont be put off. see it through.

Hi , I have to disagree with a lot of the above.
I belive that if you treat ANYONE with bad intent and ill feelings you will get it back.
I do know a couple of prison officers and they tell me that a lot of the time , the rumours are urban myths.
The prisoners do not wanna be there, so I have been told if your atitiude is wrong towards them , they will make it dificult for you.
It is not an easy job, but if your looking for a rewarding job, one with great career prospects, this is it.
As for been followed home , I would like to talk with that prison officer, if it was true ,I wonder what he did for this to happen.
The prison officers Job is varied also , from transport to teaching claases if you have a trade, yea its hard work but as far as I know it is a rewarding one.
If it is your opinion that all Junkies are scum and below you , well maybe this job isnt for you, as for me I have my application in and will jump at the chance for oportunity.
    thanks
