My mother in law lost her husband about two years ago. She has unloaded on my wife tonight to say that twice recently she has woken up to see her husband sitting at the end of the bed, once he faded after several seconds, however, the second time he remained until she had sat up and reached for him. She's not scared but her own mother used to say that when you saw the dead they were a portent of bad news and this has her worried. However, I seem to remember reading that this was actually a promising sign. Can anyone advise?

She's not Thaedydal, and truth be told she misses him and has no fear of his apparition, its more the message it means. Is it really a portent of bad news?

Some people see it like that, but many others don't. A lot of people would think it simply means that he has a message to pass on. That message could just as easily be something good and nice, he could be trying to communicate that he is ok and that she doesn't need to worry or feel bad about him.

I think the reason a lot of people would see it as a portent is that only such negative stories would ever be told and passed on. If the message was something simple like reminding someone to turn off the lights so they don't run up a huge ESB bill it wouldn't make for a very interesting story and no one would remember it :)

    Hey there,

If your mother in law is not afraid of the apparition then I see no reason to think it's anything other than that her husband has a message for her or just wants to comfort her.

Maybe he just trying to remind your mother in law that he's in a different place but is still with her if you know what I mean, I would allow it to be seen as a good thing unless she's freaked by it

Let us know how it goes

I think that its all harmless to be honest. If she has no fear of the apparition then it probably her husband just being there for her.
Let us know if anything new happens.

For years before he died her husband constantly refused to have work done on the house (he was a tightwad). After he died his wife was left with some mighty repair bills to get the house wind and water tight and during a clean up of one of his workrooms (he had a boat and kept several engines he worked on) she found a tin with several thousand £ in it. He sold a boat a few years before he died and she thinks this may have been a skim he kept aside. Anyway, his wife is now convinced its finding his stash and spending it that's made him appear :D
