Have you installed all of the drivers? i.e. network drivers

If so, and its a work domain, check your DNS settings in the Control Panel/Network connections.

i checked but all it says is that a net adapter is connected, i can plug in and out my cable and it has absolutely no effect it still says it is connected.
is there any thing else i can try?

Are you running on battery or mains?

    mains

ok, A person that left the company passed on the laptop, everything was working fine when he gave it to me, but i thought it would be a good idea to wipe the drive and start a fresh for me, so i used dban to wipe it, now when i put in the hp restore cd it says that there is a cd error, so i just used the os cd to reinstall the os, the first thing it says to me is that i have 30 days to activate windows, which is hard since i cannot create a network

Can you go into Start=>Control Panel=>System.

Under Hardware select Device Manager. Is there anything in there with yellow exclamation marks?

Have you checked device manager to see if the NIC is installed?
Run ipconfig at CMD to check if you are getting an ip address, if you IP is 169.x.x.x you are not receiving a DHCP address (maybe your office is not using DHCP, if thats the case you need to assign an IP/subnet/gateway before you will be able to contact the DC to join the domain) It's also likely that you will need an account with domain admin privileges to join your laptop to the domain

You will need to install the drivers for all these devices, especially the ethernet controller and network controller devices, as this is the problem you cannot join the domain.

Katie you are missing drivers for each of the things in yellow.

You need to get those from the original cds that would have came with the laptop or else download them from the web. Depending on the make of laptop you might be able to download them directly from their website e.g. dell otherwise you can download them individually.
