Ok lads. Picture this. You have cashed for €1000 for finishing 3rd a tourney!

Do you leave a tip for Dealers?

    How much?

And what is your reason for leaving a tip?

leave 5% because dealers get paid very little for such a boring job with unsociable long hours.

    yeah 50 quid, standard

I don't really agree with tipping dealers that much.... yeah, fair enough 50 quid isn't bad if you win €1000, but i wouldn't tip more that this. I know that they're paid pretty poorly and work unsociable hours, but so do i, and i don't get tipped much, nor do i expect to be. There are plenty of jobs out there that pay better with better hours.

I recently cashed in a tournie where the dealer made more money than me!!!

In my opinion i shouldn't have to pay a person for only doing their job. Its not my problem that they're not paid well.

You have some points but in the end if dealers are consistently getting no tips then youll end up with only foreign/unexperienced/student dealers that dont know the rules properly and wont understand any disagreement and as a whole youll end up with a poor standard of dealers i would imagine. Thats in no way an insult to any foreigners or student, my point being is that foreigners or students with little or no work experience tend to take jobs that native workers wont take due to poor pay because they are desperate to work and this may be the only work available to them. Of course there is the exceptions and some foreigners or students may know the rules off to a tee but my point being the standard of dealing would drop if nobody was tipping.

Ive also heard that in the states if you dont tip in a bar that the waiter will almost ignore you the next time you try and order so look at something like that, if you want good service in the future then tip if your happy with bad service/poor dealers and can put up with it then dont tip.:)

I think 5% is a good marker, although i completely forgot to tip in the red cow, was 4am and was hurryin home to be up for work at 6.30!

Can't stand 'expected tipping', it should be for good service, it really should be for better than expected service.

I tip people who handle my food, for obvious reasons.

I hadn't tipped at a poker tournament, it really hadn't occured to me, until someone else mentioned it during a tournament I played.

It's not the fault of the employees, but I think they just ought to be paid correctly. employeers expecting that their patrons make up the wages of the wages is annoying, I find tipping culture annoying generally.

So, since my awakening to tipping at poker tournaments, I have been tipping.

But, at some tournaments, there are some poor dealers, and some good, what to do? I haven't yet been in that situation, where I have cashed at such an event, played plenty tho...

What do you think the best thing to do in that situation would be?

Of course you just tip regardless, but it only would encourage poor service.

i'd tip if dittag wasnt a dealer...

if ever i'm lucky enough to cash in a tourny I usually ask one of the dealer's what they think would be a fair tip (this is possible as at this stage i know most of the dealers) and i then tip accordingly.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,836 ✭✭✭connie147

Tipping dealers is pretty standard in my opinion and those that think that tipping is wrong need to consider what the dealer does: they work unsociable hours and often have to put up with a load of sh#te from ignorant players who know no better. Its nice to show appreciation when you make the decent money stages of a tournament, its good karma and all that.
Most dealers get approx €10 an hour but its the tips that make it into a good nights work.

As per Lloyd, everyone should tip, end of story, but unfortunately some won't, and that is up to them. I always tip, sometimes I know that some people with limited experience of cashing in say a big tournament might not leave what is considered the right percentage.

Ask the tournament Director, they will tell you what a fair amount is.

you must tip otherwise your poker karma will be adversely affected and you'll be reincarnated as Mrs Phill Hellmuth

last year i played the scalps in the fitz with a couple of mates one of which(18yrs old) chopped it hu for 2.5k each, although he was a relatively experienced poker player(live cash, net etc) it was his first cash of this size in a tournament and his br was basically zero at the time, he offered to tip the scalps(90ish) after someone had mentioned tipping dont think he had heard of tournament tipping, when the other guy and his mate scoffed and said 200 each would only be fair, I just felt this was a bit over the top and even the scalps would have been generous imo

The question im really looking for an answer of is No. 3!

For what reason do you tip dealers?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,924 ✭✭✭Fatboydim

The answer to question three is simple.

Once you discover tipping is expected it's too embarrassing not to tip. And the equation goes:

the more you tip = the more the dealer will like you

and we all want to be liked.

Mrs Dim isn’t happy with me at the moment so I’m really generous with my tips these days. At least I would be if I won anything.

Just out of curiousity...does anyone have any idea how much of a tip is expected from a wsop winner? $12m for example...5%. $600,000!!!

What he means is do you tip a dealers for the service i.e. efficiency and competence or are you rewarding the dealers because they may have dealt you good cards on the day

If I finish in the top 2 I will tip unfailingly, if lower then it depends for how much. If I cash for 500+ I will leave something (unless that is 5th or lower). There are times when I have finsihed 2nd and tipped twice as much as 1st. Usually I am on the generous side i.e. maybe 7%-8% or so, but for bigger amounts, 2k+ (rare I admit) it will be closer to the 5% mark which is fine I think.

I have worked in the service sector for 8 years and while i'm occasionally tipped, i don't expect to be. It is nice of course, but i just don't expect it. Thats why i don't like tipping dealers.... and i'm on a similar rate to the rate connie mentioned.

The difference here is that where your not expecting to be tipped because its not the norm, dealers do expect it because it is the norm. I dont know what part of the service industry your in (nor am i asking),but players who get to the serious money side of a tourney do so by getting good hands as well as good play and tip as a sign of grattitude.

    My argument is!

If all dealers are top quality in a tourney and you where highly impressed and you dont cash.. You are not going to tip them!

If dealers are completely rubbish and you win a tourney you are still going to tip, mainly because they gave you a few nice hands as Connie said, along with a bit of good play by yourself.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,984 ✭✭✭Degag

Why should they be tipped because they gave me a few good hands?

No Tag your argument was: "People tip cos they got good hands from the dealers.... Everyone knows that!!"

In the last month i have monied in 3 tournaments. In one i came 6th & got €100, so no tip. The 2nd we chopped with 5 left for a ticket to a satalite, no tip. Finally, i came came 2nd winning €900 and so i tipped €40 which is 4.5% if my maths is any good.

I felt that was a fair amount given what i had won and the banter id been having with the dealers in the SE that, and most other nights too.

On the point of tipping, well thats personal. I do it because i like to thank people for a good service and im there at loads of tournaments where i dont money so i dont tip, this is payback.

Theres a % taken from the prizepool for dealers so no tipping at wsop, also Hurrahs service is pretty poor.

Generally I tip 5%, but only if its a decent cash otherwise money goes in the pocket.

most people forget though that a tip is shared out among every dealer so the ipc tips are shared among 40 people and the irish open will have a lot more dealers, normal weekly tournies have about 10 people sharing tips. it doesnt work out to be a lot when you finally get it. as a dealer myself, i'll leave 10% most times unless the dealers were very bad.

i think Pat is correct, i have recieved tips in the IPC and the 3k event in citywest last june from players who didnt cash nor come near it, they came up to me after the event was over handed me a few quid out of their pocket. i was amazed and absolutely delighted, it also gave me great satisfaction in my work and certainly encouraged me to do as good a job as possible in the future. Those things go a long way with me, its like feedback from the players. That i belive is fair, i dont think its fair however that if the dealers are **** and cheeky/snooty that its expected you tip them. i try to give as good a service as possible and as a result i think its fair that tips are left, but only if they think im doing a good job.

I would say min 3-5% as in alot of the big competions around the world they actually take 3% from the prize pool and share it between the dealers apart from Ireland and U.K. and thats because in ireland most players tip (apart from the tight B******s) and in the u.k. its illegal. a percentage of tournament dealers are only just part-time or trainees thats why they are dealing nl to get there experience and become better dealers and that can only benefit the players then you have your cash game dealers who mostly are casino trained and excellent who can deal pl and know the rules to most if not all different forms of poker
If players didnt tip the Qaulity of dealers would decline drastically and u would be left with slow cash games where the dealer cant figure out what the pot is and takes them 10 mins just to count your stack and self dealt tournaments which are very slow and messy. Players should actually count there blessings as Ireland has some of the best dealers from all over the world working in there cardrooms and at the irish open cash games tables .
