This is one of the best laptops I've seen in a while at a decent price
    • Intel Dual Core Processor
    • Intel Graphics Medai Accelerator
    • 15.4" Display (maybe a little small)
    • 1GB RAM
    • 120GB Hard Drive
    • Wireless
    • Vista Home Premium

    Full spec here

    Hello all

Can any of you techies out there give a second opinion on this, as I'm currently thinking of buying a new pc and know next to zero about them, but my old banger is driving me up the walls. What would a similar spec machine in dell or retail cost? Many thanks!

Hmmm its a damn nice machine to be honest .. it depends what you want to do with it really.

Its coming with a 3 year warranty so you'll have to factor that in to the price of any dell.

The inspiron 6400 looks similar in spec but someone else will no doubt correct me on this :D thats working out at around 1000 but comes with a different graphics card ...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,066 ✭✭✭youcancallmeal

I've never bought a PC from Aldi or Lidl or have I heard anything negative about them but spec looks fine and with all the software and accessories provided its a good price at €799.

If you know absolutely nothing about PC's you might be better off with a Dell for the simple reason that they have tech support, even though it is sh*te.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 11,909 ✭✭✭✭Wertz

Hmm, a decent sound card, a DVB-T card and a dvd burner too.
Not too shabby. I doubt the dell 6400 could touch this for the price...

The tech support for Lidl and Aldi PC's is absolutely superb. In Germany, Aldi are biggest movers of PCs as they are competitively priced and offer very generous guarentee's.

Are Dell laptops inspirion 6400 really that bad? I priced similiar one like the Aldi one going through the EPP,and with a free laptop bag,Im getting similar spec but with Intel® Core™ 2 Duo Processor T5200 and with 256MB ATI® Mobility™ Radeon® X1400 HyperMemory plus 9 Cell, 85Whr Lithium Ion Primary Battery for around €823...Only got this price if I selected 1year collect&return.

looks good, but is there a dvb-t service available in ireland yet?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 339 ✭✭taung

    Yes, there is a DVB-T service in Ireland, but, it is a trial service at the moment;

Nothing wrong with dell's laptops IME, and the GPU on that dell is probably a fair bit better than the medion one....but that 3 yr warranty is worth a fair bit. Although that siad, if electronics make it past 12 months chances are good that they'll make it past 36 months too...

They're all ok IMO. Just choose on spec and warranty.

this dell is far better value and has 120 gig hard drive, visita and upgrade graphics ... the only down side is 1 year warranty but that shouldnbt be problem as dells generally quite reliable .. theres 120 euro off this one at the moment

Perhaps you are agreeing with be re: choose on spec & warranty.

Don't underesitmate the value of a three year warranty. for example if your graphics card were to go it would turn your laptop into a nice paperweight.

If your laptop breaks while its within warranty you can have it replaced for free, surely thats why its good to have 3 years worth isnt it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,908 ✭✭✭Alkers

I'm going to get this tomorrow. It's the better of the aldi/lidl offers for me anyway.
Never gone for one of theese bargain jobbies in aldi, anyone know how early I'll need to be there and what time the stores open at? I'll be going to Rathmines.

No sign of Aldi closing down either and by the way did you ever ring dell for support/spare parts? Like talking to a parrot!

    It's back again for €729.99 (was €799.99)
Pretty sure it's the same laptop

    Link

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 18,056 ✭✭✭✭BostonB

You can get a Dell of the same spec for pretty much the same price. But it won't have the 3yr warranty.

I recently tried to get a out of warranty Aldi laptop repaired and parts for it couldn't be sourced. Still get a warranty to cover the ecomomic cost of the laptop. No point spending 300 on a warranty for a 500 laptop.

Whats the max it could be upgraded to and at what cost currently?

usually max 2Gb into 2 slots, cost of 2 x ddr2 667 ( if you need to replace 2 x 512mb) chips is about €100 including delivery you may only need one x 1gb for about €50

Well stood in the rain this morning only to be told the six people waiting since 0630, yes half six in the morning, were getting them.
Fair enough they deserve them for waiting.

Built an almost similiar laptop yesterday on Dell which came in at 728 including delivery. Off course did not include all the extra software, bag, mouse or card ports and only had 90 return warranty.

Will Aldi now get more laptops to satisfy the demand, there was at least three more with myself who walked away after only 45 mins in the rain.....

If you think 3 unhappy people was a problem, you should have seen the dissappointed masses for their portable satellite system on Monday last......

In all honesty- you will pick up very nice systems greatly reduced at the moment- Peats are flogging Sony Vaio core duo systems at half price (providing you don't go for the very small 12" or the larger than 17" ones).

    Have a look around elsewhere.

any more info on this? is it reflected on their website... seems generous reduction

Bridgewater has 5 different models on display greatly reduced, I haven't been into any of the other branches and I haven't checked their website. Perhaps ring the different branches and see whats available?

Runs Half Life 2 at a good framerate at medium settings. The 6150, apart from the new X1250 (which isn't really readily available) is the best integrated graphics chip in laptops.

I was in Peats yesterday and saw no sign of this. What model and what discount?
