SRT files on standalone player

Do DivX-capable standalone DVD players generally read SRT files if they have the same name as the AVI file they accompany?
If not, is there an easy way to hard-code the contents of a subtitle file into an AVI?

SRT support depends on the player - there are many "hacked" firmwares for DVD players which improve or add support for SRT. The srt file should have the same name in some cases though again it's down to the player.

"Burning subtitles into AVI" is feasible (Google search that text string) though a lot easier with the more modern MP4 & MKV containers. However standalone player support for those containers though is still not too common.
