Sound problem on laptop

Hey guys, hope someone can help me fix this.

I have a Dell Inspiron 6400 and yesterday my sound just stopped working properly. It just stays on full blast and i can't adjust it using any of the buttons on the keyboard (like Fn+page up/page down).
The icon thingy comes up on the screen that's meant to show what volume the sound is at but it just remains at the minimum although the sound is at the max. I can't even mute the computer using the buttons on the keyboard either.

Anyone have any idea how to fix this?

    Thanks

is one of your buttons stuck in down position.

No, all the buttons seem to be working normally. The sound can be adjusted if i go into control panel and then sound settings so i know it's nothing to do with the sound card or anything like that.
Also, the little speaker icon that's usually displayed down in the tray beside the time is now no longer there!
Anybody know if there are any downloads for sound settings or something like that so i can try that?

Try going into Sound and Audio Devices settings in Control Panel and see if 'Place voume icon in the taskbar' is ticked.

Yea, i did that and it is ticked but it's still not on the task bar. Is there any chance i could have deleted a programme that would cause this or is it something else causing it?

You could always do a system restore to get back to your working configuration.
    START>All programs>Acessories>System tools>System Restore...
This will return your windows setup to the last saved restore point, so pick one that was created before your problem started. This won't affect your documents either!

you can also try deleting the drivers from the system device tab, hardwares - then hit F5 or refresh the whole system and windows will automatically reinstal ll the corrupted drivers.:)

Click Start->Run and then type sndvol32.exe in the box, see if that brings up anything.
