Inventing? People like you who do not understand Islam will say things like that. But yes, it is offensive, at least to me.

right so, you are not allowed to find anyone or anything catholic funny.

I have an understanding of Islam that would probably put the average Westerner to shame actually.
But yes, it is offensive, at least to me.

Why? Those women are wearing clothing that obscures their identity, or at least appears to, it is quite amusing to think of someone bothering to make a souvenir of a family visit when it could indeed have been anyones family.

Now, I would be suprised if any given family member is not able to tell his female relatives apart despite their faces being obscured, but its funny to imagine otherwise.

No one is calling Islam stupid, no one is calling it a sexist and draconian institution, all we're doing is finding the above notion amusing.

Now, if you're so insecure in your beliefs that mere mention of them causes offense, maybe you need to reconsider your philosophical position.

I find it very amusing that a Christian can so thoroughly explain the pagan origins of Allah and yet completely ignore the fact that his very own Yaweh was originally one of the gods of the tribes of Israel.

Why not put this understanding into practice then? You should be aware that the hijab and other items of clothing which cover some or all of the body are common place for Muslim women. Does that mean we shouldn't take pictures of them?

We take pictures so that we can look back and remember that time, to show we went somewhere etc..

And you, you use the term "invent"? Meaning that it is, yet, another thing Muslims are offended by! I don't speak for all of us, but it did offend me, as it suggested taking a picture of a woman in such dress is pointless, and in a way, implies that the person taking the picture was stupid in doing so.

I severely doubt this "understanding" of yours, and it is probably no more than seeing the odd programme on TV or read an article on the internet. You certainly do not behave in a manner which would suggest otherwise.

You, and by you I mean every non-Muslim, must understand this:

Islam is a strictly followed religion; the majority of Muslims follow the Qur'an devoutly, and adhere their lives to the rules with which it sets down.

Unlike Catholicism and Protestantism (which I imagine to be the most popular forms of religion followed in the world, particularly the West), and, becuase of this, there will be less people offended by anti-Catholic or even slightly negative remarks made by non-Catholics, because less of you follow your religion as strictly as you should.

Muslims pray every day, not just once a week which seems to be considered "good" in Catholic circles. This, I have no problem with, and I do not suggest you should go to Mass or pray to God as much as we do. All I ask, is that you understand we, well, most of us, place our utmost faith in the Qur'an, and any sleight on our faith is more likely to offend us than that on Christian faiths.

So yes, we are more easily offended than some other religions, but for that you cannot blame us. Yet, in this case, you do.

With all due respect to muslims lets look at the humourous side to the photo:

For a start its 4 people dressed in the appropriate muslim dress.
    We dont know their gender
we cant if they're related by looking at them.
It would not be unfair to say, they could be anyone.
Due to their faces being covered, we cant interpret their emotions or facial expressions thus deducting whether they are happy or sad etc or indeed whether it could be a fond memory to look back on.

When my friends and family take a group photo its often said that its ruined or spoiled if someone is blinkin (i.e. eyes shut) or momentarily lookin away from the camera when the picture is developed.

so in summary its a funny picture, but not cos they're muslim.

    I appreciate your reply.

Bear in mind, it is a family picture, and therefore for the family of those in it. I doubt it was their idea to have it published on the internet.

Also, the people in the picture are women, men don't wear dress like that.

I guess my gripe with this thread is calling the picture "pointless", as I can see why non-Muslims would find it funny.

fair enough point, but you'd probably agree that there isnt much the OP could call the thread that wouldnt offend someone?

You know, you're right there I guess.

    Perhaps I over-reacted, in fact, I'll say I did.

But for him to say "stop inventing reasons to be offended", that in itself gave the wrong impressions of Muslims and their beliefs. From my point-of-view anyway.

No, but it means an out of context joke based on it is still funny.
And you, you use the term "invent"? Meaning that it is, yet, another thing Muslims are offended by! I don't speak for all of us, but it did offend me, as it suggested taking a picture of a woman in such dress is pointless, and in a way, implies that the person taking the picture was stupid in doing so.

The picture made it seem pointless, which was funny. It also implied the guy taking the picture was stupid yes, thats funny. He might not be stupid, who knows. But the joke works.

The Rabbi doesn't need to actually walk into the bar for it to be funny, we just pretend he does...
I severely doubt this "understanding" of yours, and it is probably no more than seeing the odd programme on TV or read an article on the internet. You certainly do not behave in a manner which would suggest otherwise.

Yes, I've seen several documentaries and read a lot on the internet, I'm currently reading the Qur'an (terribly boring book tbh...). The fact that I don't like Islam's teachings doesn't mean I don't understand them.
Islam is a strictly followed religion; the majority of Muslims follow the Qur'an devoutly, and adhere their lives to the rules with which it sets down.

Yeah I don't like it when people eschew their own intelligence and opinion in favour of obeying a magic book and the omnipotent sky daddy. As we all know, morality = terrified obedience.
So yes, we are more easily offended than some other religions, but for that you cannot blame us. Yet, in this case, you do.

Oh I most certainly blame you. Muslims are like that guy at the party who tries to build a house of cards on the table, and blames everyone else for bumping into it and making his flimsy construction fall down around him. He even goes to far as to start screaming at anyone that even goes near the table.

Its your own damn fault for building such a ridiculous structure in the first place.
But for him to say "stop inventing reasons to be offended", that in itself gave the wrong impressions of Muslims and their beliefs. From my point-of-view anyway.

I have no doubt I've given you reasons to be offended now, but there was nothing insulting about the opening of the thread. Like I said, there doesn't have to be anything true about a joke for it to be funny.

If you choose to be insulted by something that was not meant to offend then thats your perogative, but it only reinforces the stereotype of the easy-to-provoke Muslim.

    ^^^Pretty spot on.
Most of the best humour is derogatory to some group/way of life FFS. If you cant laugh at yourself etc etc.....
Lighten up, there are worse things in the world. Another day, another silly argument caused by organised religion.

xha1r - Rest assured that all of those replies to your posts were not from good, God-fearing Christians. The reason I know - well, they were posted yesterday which as we all know is Sunday - the day of rest when no Christian worth their salt would be found using equipment of any kind (mechanical, electronic, etc.). :p

    However...

It is now Monday, the Good Lord says that I can get back to work & I have to say that I thought the pic was quite funny. I cannot see how that my considering it funny is offensive to Muslims. It is humourous from my Western cultural perspective. Get over it.

Don't tell me that there's nothing you don't find funny about the Irish/Christian/Western way of life from your cultural perspective. If there isn't then you're living a very unhumourous life & that's sad. :(
