Zen Vision M being a total pain!

Ok, got a 30GB Zen Vision M two or so weeks ago. Worked grand for the first week and then one night it froze and I had to resort to resetting it. All my music files were intact but my video files vanished.

Then for about a week everytime I turned the thing on it would spend about 5 minutes ''reconstructing media library'' or something like that.

For the first time since I reset the player I tried to put some music onto the player. So I attach the USB and insert it onto my laptop and it nothing is happening. No icon appears in the system tray and when I click on Zen Vision M Media Explorer it say please connect the player so my laptop isn't recognising the player. I put other hardware into the same USB port and they're working grand so its definitely an issue with the player.

After going into Control Panel, Hardware, Device Manager I try troubleshooting and then under Portable Media Players I get an icon saying MTB Device constantly going mental like its going on and off. I've even uninstalled and reinstalled all the software and the problem still wont go away.

Anyone any ideas what's the problem? I havent heard anything back from Creative and I'm seriously worried that the player is fcuked!

If you've only had it 2 weeks then it should still be under warranty. I just got my 60gig on Wednesday and thankfully it's worked like a dream so far but I'll be keeping my fingers crossed after reading this.

    Good luck.

Once again -- did you try recovery mode?

a reset is not recovery mode.

Hey twanda, thanks a million for that. There was no information whatsoever about any recovery mode in the instruction manual I got, it only instructed to reset the player if it froze. The info on recovery mode was on the creative website but I had to format the player and now all my data has gone :( at least my laptop is recognising the player again so I'll be able to get all my songs and stuff back on to it. Creative's customer service must be gone to the dogs as I still have heard nothing back from them yet

I'm struggling with that too, there's nothing for me either to safely remove the USB cable from my laptop. I don't like yanking the USB cable out, that was why i thought i had the problem the player in the first place.

I'm having the same problem with my ZEn,it is no longer being recognized by my laptop at all.Apparently this is something of a common occurance as evidenced by the forums on the creative site. This thread offers a number of possible solutions: http://forums.creative.com/creativelabs/board/message?board.id=pmc&message.id=7923&view=by_date_ascending&page=5
I haven't been able to get mine to work yet,it's ****ing killing me

If you have an MTP device that is recognised in the device manager, but not in windows media player etc. then you should try changing the USB permissions in the registry. (You should make a backup of your registry before doing so, just in case )

    To change USB permissions:

Click Start and then Run. Type regedit and then click Ok to open the Registry Editor.
Click on the plus sign (+) next to My Computer to expand it. Continue to expand the following entries: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\ENUM

Locate and click the USB category. In the menu bar, click Edit, and then Permissions.
Select "Everyone" on the "Group or user names" section. In the "Permissions for Everyone" section, check the "Allow" box for "Full Control" and "Read".

If the 'Everyone' entry is missing from the "Group or user names", click Add and type "Everyone" into the "Enter the object names to select" dialog and click on the "OK" button. In the "Permissions for Everyone" section, check the "Allow" box for "Full Control" and "Read"

    Click on the OK button.

Check to see if it is recognised now.

If the device is recognised with a ! mark in the device manager, then double click it and select driver>> update driver. Choose NOT to connect to the internet and choose to install automatically. an MTP device does not come with any drivers as windows XP should have these already.

If windows cannot find a driver then you may need to install updates from Microrsoft - service pack 2 being the most important. I am sure you can find out about any other necessary updates from Microsoft or the MTP device manufacturer.

The above paragraph also goes for people who cannot get their MTP devices recognised at all, not even by the device manager.
