I am doing an undergrad at DCU so i might be able to help. I think the access course is there to branch an info for those who have a diploma or now ordinary degree. So it will involve maths and mechanics and the not usually covered in the ordinary degree to bring you up to honours level. If you have an honours degree you do not need to do this access course and can attend the GD directly. TBH i think the course is fairly heavily theoritical and involves a fair bit of maths (i enquired recently myself) but there is great job prospects.
The best info would be gotten on

Dr Joesph Stokes runs the programme, he is a pretty ok guy, drop him an email and enquire
