Advice on approaching CV... changing career

    Hi all,

I was hoping that someone experienced with CV's would read this and help me out.

I am (hopefully) going to complete an Open University degree in October. This is my 6th, and final, year of study, the degree is in International Studies. For the last 11 or so years I have also been working full time as a graphic designer.

All fine and well so far... thing is I would like to switch jobs, maybe moving into the public sector.

My question is, what is the best way to structure my CV, all of my work experience is print/ design. I deal with clients all the time with my job, keeping them happy, problem solving etc. and I suppose I would emphasize this aspect of it, ie. find some 'cross-over' skills?

But how do I stop people from looking a the CV, seeing 'graphic designer' and wondering - as they scrunch it up and throw it in the bin - why this person has applied for the position?

I realise that the thinking is that the CV should be tailored to each particular position. I've tried this and received a few PFO's (no interview offer). Maybe I should go to some agency or other who will help me construct it?

Any advice would be gratefully appreciated - maybe I'm going about this all wrong/being unrealistic?

When changing careers i presume a good cover letter would be vital.....Do you think you have a good one?

Thanks lolkelly - you say the cover letter would be key? Mmm... that's a good point, the last few jobs I applied for were online, so there was little scope for explaining myself.

I would have thought that the public sector would embrace people of different employment backgrounds. The funny thing is, it seems to be difficult to get into yet sometimes when I deal with people in the public sector I think, 'my god, how did you manage to land this job?'

I did the exam for the Executive Officer role in the RDS in November 05, I came just under 500 for Dublin and I think 79 for Louth/Meath (the maths bit let me down :) ) but I haven't heard a peep about it since?
