    hey.
I do a bit of running during the week when i get home from work. I was wondering has anyone any suggestions as to what is the best food to eat beforehand in terms of giving you energy but not going to give you too much of a stitch. When i say beforehand i dont mean immediately before but maybe an hour or so. I hear jelly babies are good....is this true? I usually eat an apple ebout 20 mins before but while i'm not sure if it gives me that much energy, i always feel hungry after it.
    Anyway suggestions appreciated.

It really depends on how far you run mate, as well as what time you last you had your last meal at. If its after work, and say I wasn´t running too far, I personally wouldn´t eat until after the run.

lots of people eat jelly babies while running because they offer a source of simple sugars and are easy to chew on the move. I prefer something like a banana or in a competition I usually use energy gels or energy drinks.

If you're going to eat about an hour before running then you can afford to take something more nutritious without worrying about eating on the hoof. Fruit is good but if you're going to workout very hard then may not pack enough of a carbohydrate punch. A cereal bar is an easy source but either make your own or read the ingredients carefully. Not all cereal bars are created equal.

I often have some porridge or home made rice pudding. Ideally I eat this about 2-3 hours before a run to allow it to clear my stomach. If I'm going out for more than 90 minutes I'll take something with me.

    Banana - a bit before,
    or
Jaffa Cakes - for something quick to gobble.

I'd usually have nothing before a run, that suits me well. If it's going to be a long run then I'll have some couscous an hour before. I like couscous because it seems to digest a lot faster (maybe because it's already ground?) and I can run comfortably a lot sooner after eating it than anything else I've found.

Stuff like jelly babies and all are to give you energy boosts when you're running really long distances. You don't need anything like that for most runs. I wouldn't take them before the run, they'll cause your blood sugar levels to spike. If you take them while exercising or right before starting then they won't.
